Chapter I: Time to Pretend

Introvert

Little Simz

Liner Notes:

If you are a regular to the "favorites"... you'll know that the first track is an incredibly important selection and placement.

I'm an introvert myself and there is an attraction to this song for this reason alone, but back to "opening tracks"...

come on... just listen. Perfect.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

There's a war (there's a war)

The kingdom's on fire, the blood of a young messiah
I see sinners in a church, I see sinners in a church
Sometimes I might be introvert
There's a war inside, I hear battle cries
Mothers burying sons, young boys playing with guns
The devil's a liar, fulfil your wildest desires
Now I don't wanna be the one to doctor this
But if you can't feel pain then you can't feel the opposite
The fight between the Yin and Yang's a fight you'll never win
I study humans, that makes me an anthropologist
I'm not into politics but I know it's dark times
Parts of the world still living in Apartheid (there's a war, there's a war)
But if I don't take this winner's flight that's career suicide
Though I should've been a friend when your grandma died
I see the illness eat my aunt laying in her bed
I see her soul rising as her body gets closer to death

Find a way, I'll find a way
The world's not over
I will make it, don't you cry
In God we trust
'Cause we're not alone

I need a license to feel (I can't feel)
Internal wounds and I'm not tryna be healed (no I don't, no I don't, no)
I sabotage what we are trying to build
'Cause of feelings I keep inside but it's time to reveal (reveal, reveal)
I hate the thought of just being a burden
I hate that these conversations are surfaced
Simz the artist or Simbi the person?
To you I'm smiling but really I'm hurting
I dedicate my life and gave my heart over twenty-something years
Left wondering how I even feel
Or was it was even worth it?
I bottle up and then spill it in verses
One day I'm wordless, next day I'm a wordsmith
Close to success but to happiness I'm the furthest
At night I wonder if my tears will dry on their own
Hoping I will fulfil Amy's purpose
Angel said, "Don't let you ego be a disturbance"
Inner demon said, "Motherfucker, you earned this"
Like they strip you of everything you're deserving
Realize there is a prison in us, we are conditioned as fuck
Man, it's like they can't sleep 'til our spirit is crushed
How much fighting must we do? We've been fearless enough
All we see is broken homes here and poverty
Corrupt government officials, lies and atrocities
How they talking on what's threatening the economy
Knocking down communities to re-up on properties
I'm directly effected, it does more than just bother me
Look beyond the surface, don't just see what you wanna see?
My speech ain't involuntary
Project with intention straight from my lungs
I'm a black woman and I'm a proud one
We walk in blind faith not knowing the outcome
But as long as we're unified, then we've already won

Find a way, I'll find a way
The worlds not over
I will make it, don't you cry
In God we trust
'Cause we're not alone

And so it begins
The base is an amalgamation of everything
Rules are not to be played by rebels
The story of never ending
Your introversion led you here
Intuition protected you along the way
Feelings allowed you to be well balanced
And perspective gave you foresight
The top of the mountain is nothing without the climb
Only the strong will survive
Only the strong will survive

Alone but not lonely
Your truth unveils with time
As you embark on a journey
Of what it takes to be a woman

United In Grief

Kendrick Lamar

Liner Notes:

I realize this is the so-called "title track" of the accompanying playlist. But other than this is the inarguable opening track to the 2022 year, it also sets the stage for this year's compilation title "United In/Difference".

I had the opportunity to see Kendrick this year with Phineas and nephew Ben for the World Steppers Tour. And it did not disappoint. In fact, I would place it as a top five show of all time. The set. The choreography. The energy. The multi-layered compositions. The lyrics.

It's art.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I've been goin' through somethin'
One thousand, eight hundred and 55 days
I've been goin' through somethin'
Be afraid

...

I went and got me a therapist
I can debate on my theories and sharing it (whoa)
Consolidate all my comparisons
Humblin' up because time was imperative (whoa)
Started to feel like it's only one answer to everything, I don't know where it is (whoa)
Popping a bottle of Claritin (whoa)
Is it my head or my arrogance? (Whoa)

...

I grieve different

All lyrics:

I hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime
Tell them, tell 'em, tell them the truth
I hope you find some paradise (tell them, tell 'em the truth)
Tell 'em, tell 'em, tell 'em, tell them your-

I've been goin' through somethin'
One thousand, eight hundred and 55 days
I've been goin' through somethin'
Be afraid

What is a bitch in a miniskirt?
A man in his feelings with bitter nerve
What is a woman that really hurt?
A demon, you're better off killin' her
What is a relative, making repetitive narratives on how you did it first?
That is a predator, hit reverse
All of your presidents evil thirst

What is a neighborhood rep'table?
That is a snitch on a pedestal
What is a house with a better view?
A family broken in variables
What is a rapper with jewelry?
A way that I show my maturity
What if I call on security?
That mean I'm calling on God for purity

I went and got me a therapist
I can debate on my theories and sharing it (whoa)
Consolidate all my comparisons
Humblin' up because time was imperative (whoa)
Started to feel like it's only one answer to everything, I don't know where it is (whoa)
Popping a bottle of Claritin (whoa)
Is it my head or my arrogance? (Whoa)

Shaking and moving, like, what am I doing? I'm flipping my time through the Rolodex
Indulging myself and my life and my music, the world that I'm in is a cul-de-sac
The world that we in is just menacing, the demons portrayed religionous
I wake in the morning, another appointment, I hope the psychologist listenin'

The new Mercedes with black G Wagon
The "Where you from?" It was all for rap
I was 28 years young, twenty mill' in tax
Bought a couple of mansions just for practice
Five hundred in jewelry, chain was magic
Never had it in public, late reaction
50K to cousins, post a caption
Pray none of my enemies hold me captive

I grieve different

I grieve different
Huh

I met her on the third night of Chicago
North America tour, my enclave
Fee-fi-fo-fum, she was a model
Dedicated to the songs I wrote and the Bible
Eyes like green, penetratin' the moonlight
Hair done in a bun, energy in the room like
Big Bang for theory, God, hopin' you hear me
Phone off the ringer, tell the world I'm busy

Fair enough, green eyes said her mother didn't care enough
Sympathize when her daddy in the chain gang
Her first brother got killed, he was 21
I was nine when they put Lamont in the grave
Heartbroken when Estelle didn't say goodbye
Chad left his body after we FaceTimed
Green eyes said you'd be okay, first tour, sex the pain away

I grieve different

I grieve different
Huh

The new Mercedes with black G Wagon
The "Where you from?" It was all for rap
I was 28 years young, twenty mill' in tax
Bought a couple of mansions just for practice
Five hundred in jewelry, chain was magic
Never had it in public, late reaction
50K to cousins, post a caption
Pray none of my enemies hold me captive

So what? Paralyzed, the county building controlled us
I bought a Rolex watch, I only wore it once
I bought infinity pools, I never swimmed in
I watched Keem buy four cars in four months
You know the family dynamic's on repeat
The insecurities locked down on PC
I bought a .223, nobody peace treat
You won't doo-doo me, I smell TNT

Dave got him a Porsche, so I got me a Porsche
Paid lottery for it, I ain't want it in portions
Poverty was the case
But the money wipin' the tears away

I grieve different
Everybody grieves different
Everybody grieves different
I grieve different
Huh

Count Me Out

Kendrick Lamar

Liner Notes:

The companion song to "United in Grief" (the song) and the perfect opener for "United in Grief" (the playlist). The lyrics can speak for themselves. Read along.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Miss Regret, I got these deep regrets
Some things I can't forget
Lord knows, I've tried my best
You said it's not my best
I came up out my flesh
Some things I must confess
Spoke my truth, paid my debt
Can't you see I'ma wreck?
Let me loose, I digress
This is me and I'm blessed
This is me and I'm blessed

All lyrics:

We may not know which way to go
On this dark road
(Mr. Duckworth)
All of these hoes make it difficult
Session ten, breakthrough

One of these lives, I'ma make things right
With the wrongs I've done, that's one of you now
With the Father, Son, 'til then, I fight
Rain on me, put the blame on me
Got guilt, got hurt, got shame on me
Got six magazines that's aimed at me
Done every magazine, what's fame to me? (And I'm trippin' and fallin')
It's a game to me, where the bedroom at?
Sleep, I ain't had affairs with that
What's fair when the hearts and the words don't reach?
What's fair when the money don't take things back?
It's rare when somebody take your dreams back? (And I'm trippin' and fallin')
I care too much, wanna share too much
In my head too much, I shut down too
I ain't there too much, I'm a complex soul
They layered me up, then broke me down
And moralities dust, I lack in trust (and I'm trippin' and fallin')
This time around, I trust myself
Please everybody else but myself
All else fails, I was myself
Out done fear, out done myself
This year, you better one yourself (and I'm trippin' and fallin')
Masks on the babies, mask on an opp
Wear masks in the neighborhood stores you shot
But a mask won't hide who you are inside
Look around, the realities carved in the lies
Wipe my ego, dodge my pride (and I'm trippin' and fallin')
Look myself in the mirror
Amityville, I ain't seen nothin' scarier
I fought like a pit bull terrier, blood I shed could fill up aquariums
Tell my angels, "Carry 'em" (and I'm trippin' and fallin')
Every emotion been deprived
Even my strong points couldn't survive
If I didn't learn to love myself, forgive myself a hundred times, dawg

I love when you count me out (huh)
I love when you count me out
I love when you count me out (wah, woo, ooh)
I love when you count me out
Fuck it up, fuck it up
Fuck it up, fuck it up, fuckin' it up
How you gon' win my trust when the lies run deep? (Wah, woo, wah)
How you gon' bend your love when the bad don't sleep? (Sheeesh)
Beep, beep, crash our feelings in the middle of the street (vroom, vroom)

Fuck it up, fuck it up
Fuck it up, fuck it up, fuckin' it up (huh, huh)

When you was at your lowest, tell me where the hoes was at?
When you was at your lowest, tell me where the bros was at?
Three-thirty in the mornin', scroll through the call log (huh, huh, huh, huh)
Ain't nobody but the mirror lookin' for the fall off (Brrt)

I love when you count me out
I love when you count me out
I love when you count me out
I love when you count me out (wah, woo, wah, woo, wah)

My name is in your mouth, shoo, shoo
It's gon' take more than pride to stop
Call 9-1-1, I caught a body
Sun up now, yesterday is fadin'
Healing's only 'bout a mile away
Let me tell you 'bout the women I know (that's my baby)
I know karma like to follow us strong (sheesh)
I know millionaires that feel alone (sheesh)
Anytime I couldn't find God, I still could find myself through a song
Many find they life in a phone

Fuck it up, fuck it up
Fuck it up, fuck it up, fuckin' it up

You said I'd feel better if I just work hard without liftin' my head up
That left me fed up
You made me worry, I wanted my best version but you ignored me
Then changed the story
Then changed the story
Good energy in the room, drop the location, please
Antibiotic for the womb, when I'm frustrated, please
(Antibiotic for the womb, when I'm frustrated)
Tryna keep my good conscious in rotation
Thoughts in my head, they livin' there with no- (tryna keep my good)
I made a decision, never give you my feelings
Fuck with you from, fuck with you from a distance
Some put it on the Devil when they fall short
I put it on my ego, lord of all lords
Sometimes I fall for her, dawg

I love when you count me out
I love when you count me out (sheesh)
I love when you count me out (sheesh)
I love when you count me out
My name is in your mouth

Fuck it up, fuck it up (true, true)
Fuck it up, fuck it up, fuckin' it up

Miss Regrets, I believe that you done me wrong (Miss Regrets)
Miss Regrets, can you please exit out my home? (Miss Regrets)
Miss Regret, I think I'm better off alone (Miss Regrets)
(Miss Regret)
Miss Regret, I got these deep regrets (and I'm trippin' and fallin')
Some things I can't forget
Lord knows, I've tried my best
You said it's not my best
I came up out my flesh
Some things I must confess (ayy, ayy) (and I'm trippin' and fallin')
Spoke my truth, paid my debt (ayy, ayy)
Can't you see I'ma wreck? (Ayy, ayy)
Let me loose, I digress (ayy, ayy)
This is me and I'm blessed (ayy, ayy)
This is me and I'm blessed (ayy, ayy)
This is me and I'm blessed (ayy, ayy)
This is me and I'm blessed (ayy, ayy)
Anybody fightin' through the stress? (Ayy, ayy)
Anybody fightin' through the?

Gorilla

Little Simz

Liner Notes:

Any opening track to a well curated playlist(s) needs to be particular. It not only needs to sound like an opener, it needs to "feel" like one as it sets the tone . Little Simz's "Gorilla" was the obvious track this year. In fact, I wish I could sample the synth-filled bass line that cycles throughout the song and make as the "transition" between each song of this playlist.

This is the beginning of Chapter I.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

big art collector, silent investor, film director
Beatin' on my chest goin' apeshit, put him in the grave shit
Fame life what you make it, yeah, it is

All lyrics:

Sim Simma
Who got the keys to my bloodclaat Bimmer?
Big time driller, monkey to gorilla
Who is this woman that I'm seein' in the mirror?
Drink '42 and smoke cigar
Name one time where I didn't deliver
Silent figure
I was just on the ends, droppin' gems with my friends
I got a 3310 and a pack of blems
Then got the gold, full black, circle back again
Rappin' when nothin' progressive was happenin'
Ooh, pain tolerance, couldn't break us
Pay homage if you respect how we came up, cool (cool)
Tryin' to get to the paper
Hitter from Jamaica might do me a favor, true (true)
Big Simma dippin' ten toes in the ice cold river
Bank got bigger
Been a different species, tunes in the locker
Been waitin' to unleash these
It's a no show if you can't guarantee fees (no, no, no)
I ain't got one threat to consider
Heaven and Earth attached to one killer (one, one)
Rest in peace to Mac Miller, new Simz drop to shake the whole shit up
What's next? (Ayy)
We'll be here for months talkin' about prospects
Stayin' about my job, yes sir
When rain is against her I'm weather-resistant
On my polyester (grrah, grrah, grrah)
Run through the jungle, they should've never let her (woop, woop)
Cut and wounds, I hope never will fester
Mmh, yeah, big art collector, silent investor, film director
Beatin' on my chest goin' apeshit, put him in the grave shit
Fame life what you make it, yeah, it is

Cuttin' through the jungle in a all black fitted
Hat low, incognito livin'
Introvert, but, she ain't timid
My art will be timeless, I don't do limits (no)
Be very specific when you talk on who the best is
How can I address this?
Basically, the rest is almost like to me what a stain to a vest is
You ain't drop nothin' in my eyes I'm impressed with
Please, don't be offended (please)
But I'm not in the business of pretendin' (no)
I got lines if you wanna get rentin'
Go find the agony aunt and get ventin' (vent)
Stop floodin' my mentions with bullshit
Talkin' on Simz like she's someone you went school with, awkward (awkward)
From day, been a cool kid, rap stars hopin', the faith, I'm restorin'
Don't ask my opinion on shit
Cause to make you feel good about yourself is exhaustin'
I got bangers out in the world soarin'
And I got bangers in the vault I've been hoardin'
Yeah, true I got tennis in the mornin'
Before I start swingin' that man's gonna need a warnin'
Red light whenever I'm recordin'
Red light on the forehead of the informant
See, I'm the only one on gorilla
Simz is back here, just got realer, yeah
No choice now but to feel us
I know the streets will love it, like I brought Mike Skinner
Said, "Simmer down, little homie, simmer"
All that talk get you rubbed out quicker
I'm cut with a different scissor
From the same cloth as my dear ancestors
That's why this shit gives you the shivers, I'm that cold

Higher
Goin' higher
Higher
Goin' higher
Higher
Yeah, we are
Higher
Say what?

Hey, sound so special inside the world we live in
It's so rare to find it, huh
Huh, go peep that, yeah
It's about time
We got the just dues for the work
we put in over a decade in this bitch, you know
Yeah, man, woo

Say he never called another woman, "Mi Amor"
So, I opened up the way and now he adore
Did it on the wave, I don't play, get you sea sick
Charged up, fully barred up, I'm unleashin'

Will Anybody Ever Love Me?

Sufjan Stevens

Liner Notes:

If you're a "Favorites" veteran, you'll know that Sufjan frequents the playlists and may very well be the "Favorites GOAT".

Excluding other genres, I just don't know if there is another (present-day) musician out there within the alt-indie space that has the compositional and lyrical talent, depth, and prolificacy than Sufjan  — who also, along with both daughters Grace and Emily, happens to be a Hope College graduate.

One of the background vocalists said this about working with Sufjan on his 2023 release, Javelin

"Being in the studio with Sufjan is like watching an alchemist at work. He creates a new realm, building our voices from a gentle choir, then morphing us into sirens raging from the sea."

Consider this an introspective continuation to Carrie and Lowell. While the latter intricately unpacked the death and relationship of his mother, Javelin is largely a tribute to his 14-year relationship with late partner, Evans Richardson.

But mourning another relationship has not been the only thing on Sufjan's mind. Just before the album's release, media and devoted fans alike were shocked by the news that Sufjan has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a neurological disorder where the body's immune system attacks a portion of the peripheral nervous system. Specifically, Sufjan is having to learn to walk again — not to mention rehabbing particular movements/muscles for playing instruments. (The progress is undetermined and ongoing.)

Historically, Sufjan has managed to keep his personal life, relationships, and sexuality quite private. So, when Sufjan announced the news regarding his health and the album's subject-matter, it provided quite the context for this album.

In short, it's therapy (for all of us).

This particular track, "Will Anybody Ever Love Me?" is appropriately rooted around the question itself — a question that could easily be brushed aside with an automated response. My hope is that we can refrain from this response for the next few minutes and simply ask the question.

This is the beginning of Chapter II.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Tie me to the final wooden stake
Burn my body, celebrate the afterglow
Wash away the summer sins I made
Watch me drift and watch me struggle, let me go
'Cause I really wanna know

Will anybody ever love me? (Love me)
For good reasons, without grievance
Not for sport (not for sport)

All lyrics:

Chase away my heart and heartache
Run me over, throw me over, cast me out
Find a river running to the west wind
Just above the shoreline, you will see a cloud

Tie me to a tiny wooden raft
Burn my body, point me to the undertow
Push me off into the void at last
Watch me drift and watch me struggle, let me go
'Cause I really wanna know

Will anybody ever love me? (Love me)
For good reasons, without grievance
Not for sport

Will anybody ever love me? (Love me)
In every season pledge allegiance to my heart
Pledge allegiance to my burning heart

Hello wildness, please forgive me now
For the heartache and the misery I create
Take my suffering as I take my vow
Wash me now, anoint me with that golden blade

Tie me to the final wooden stake
Burn my body, celebrate the afterglow
Wash away the summer sins I made
Watch me drift and watch me struggle, let me go
'Cause I really wanna know

Will anybody ever love me? (Love me)
For good reasons, without grievance
Not for sport (not for sport)

Will anybody ever love me? (Love me)
In every season pledge allegiance
To my heart (to my heart)
In every season pledge allegiance
To my heart (to my heart)

My burning heart
My burning heart
My burning heart

Will anybody ever love me? (Love me)
My burning heart
Will anybody ever love me? (Love me)
My burning heart
Will anybody ever love me? (Love me)
My burning heart

Lithonia

Childish Gambino

Liner Notes:

"Lithonia" by Childish Gambino is a moody, introspective track from his 2024 album *Atavista*, named after a small city in Georgia—perhaps a nod to Donald Glover’s formative years in the Atlanta area. The song leans into haunting, layered production and cryptic lyricism, reflecting on themes of nostalgia, escape, and personal reinvention. While Gambino is no stranger to bending genres, "Lithonia" carries a certain woozy, late-night melancholy that feels like a cousin to his *Because the Internet* era. Though not overtly sampled from another artist, the track certainly draws on the ethereal sonic textures he's explored in past works. As with much of Gambino’s music, the brilliance lies in its ambiguity—fans are left piecing together its connections to his larger artistic narrative. Is Lithonia a literal place or a metaphor for something deeper? With Glover, the answer is usually: both.

I Don't Live Here Anymore (feat. Lucius)

The War On Drugs, Lucius

Liner Notes:

This song sounds like every other War on Drugs song – outdoor-Americana-summer-driving-music.

This is not a bad thing.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

I was lying in my bed
A creature void of form
Been so afraid of everything
I need a chance to be reborn

I never wanted anything
That someone had to give
I don't live here anymore
I went along the wind

When I think about the old days, babe
You're always on my mind
I know it ain't like I remember
I guess my memories run wild

Like when we went to see Bob Dylan
We danced to "Desolation Row"
But I don't live here anymore
But I got no place to go

Beating like a heart
I'm gonna walk through every doorway, I can't stop
I need some time, I need control, I need your love
I wanna find out everything I need to know

I'm gonna say everything that there is to say
Although you've taken everything I need away
I'm gonna make it to the place I need to go
We're all just walkin' through this darkness on our own

Time surrounds me like an ocean
My memories like waves
Is life just dying in slow motion
Or getting stronger everyday?

I never took our love for granted
You never left me wanting more
But you'd never recognise me, babe
I don't live here anymore

Beating like a heart
I'm gonna walk through every doorway, I can't stop
I need some time, I need control, I need your love
I wanna find out everything I need to know

I'm gonna say everything that I need to say
Although you've taken everything I need away
I'm gonna take you to the place I need to go
We're all just walkin' through this darkness on our own

Beating like a heart
I'm gonna walk through every doorway, I can't stop
I need some time, I need control, I need your love
I wanna find out everything I need to know

I'm gonna say everything that I need to say
Although you've taken everything I need away
I'm gonna take you to the place I need to go
We're all just walkin' through this darkness on our own

We're all just walkin' through this darkness on our own
We're all just walkin' through this darkness on our own
We're all just walkin' through this darkness on our own
We're all just walkin' through this darkness on our own

Nothing's Changed

Cisco Swank, Luke Titus, Saba

Liner Notes:

Fun fact. Luke Titus (Chicago) is considered a musical prodigy – earning an incredibly coveted spot as a drummer/"Blue Man" for the "Blue Man Group" while still in high school – the youngest to ever be awarded a spot.

Now a multi-instrumentalist-producer, this is a collab with fellow multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Cisco Swank (Brooklyn) and Saba (Chicago), who is no stranger to working with fellow Chicago artists (i.e. Chance the Rapper).

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Like Golden State, I could see the future, my draft included
The stock rising for music with deeper meanings to it
The infrastructure, the city broke, you can see the sewage
Chic like Bo Peep, lowkey, keep reclusive
City overheated like the engine needed cooling
This is antifreeze
Like a vanity, we see it for what it is
Hop a banister, the teenagers bust your lips simply for the fuck of it
Potential bangers and preemptive danger
Pent-up aggression, your death is proof that some children gangster
They partition parts in the metropolis you live in
And got the kids in the park pondering what a rim is

'Cause it's so insane
Nothing’s changed
Watch it fade away

All lyrics:

Tell of pestilence and no pessimism
How you downin' when records could get you recognition?
The differences between a handout and having assistance
That’s night and day, it's safe to say that this is tunnel vision
My uncle pissin' dirty, he thirty, ask me for urine
Ayy, dude, you dirty, like Eddy Curry, ask for forgiveness
So I can’t blame any day that we tried to cheat the system
If it ain't far as the first place, the fuck is we gon' win in?
Potential bias and potential wires
Politic with the tooly, they keep a wrench and pliers
Put you in a private land and got your name engraved
Or get locked up, released on bond with bread, yo, am I saved?

'Cause it's so insane
Nothing's changed
Watch it fade away (Oh)
Yeah

Like Golden State, I could see the future, my draft included
The stock rising for music with deeper meanings to it
The infrastructure, the city broke, you can see the sewage
Chic like Bo Peep, lowkey, keep reclusive
City overheated like the engine needed cooling
This is antifreeze
Like a vanity, we see it for what it is
Hop a banister, the teenagers bust your lips simply for the fuck of it
Potential bangers and preemptive danger
Pent-up aggression, your death is proof that some children gangster
They partition parts in the metropolis you live in
And got the kids in the park pondering what a rim is

'Cause it's so insane
Nothing’s changed
Watch it fade away (Fade away, fade away, fade away)
’Cause it's so insane
Nothing’s changed
Watch it fade away

The Smoke

The Smile

Liner Notes:

If you've been around music at all over the last few decades, you should be able to identify who's actually behind this smooth experimental rock jam in the first 30 seconds. And if you don't get it then, you'll sure as hell get it when the vocals kick in.

The Smile is an offshoot of Radiohead – comprised of vocalist Thom Yorke and guitarist Johnny Greenwood and (non-Radiohead) drummer Tom Skinner.

While The Smile doesn't detour far from Radiohead's roots, there does seem to be a bit of post-punk-jazz infused throughout the album. This track was an immediate summer fav.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

It's easy to leave me
We should give ourselves another chance
Let go of our troubles
Into our caress
Our caress

And we set ourselves on fire
We set ourselves on fire

All lyrics:

Easy, easy
It begs me while I'm sleeping
A desire, second chance
I have set myself on fire

It's easy
Don't mess with me
Don't mess with me
As I die in the flames
As I set myself on fire

Uh

Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from
Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
A one true revolution

Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me

It's easy to leave me
We should give ourselves another chance
Let go of our troubles
Into our caress
Our caress

And we set ourselves on fire
We set ourselves on fire

Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from
Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from
Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from my sleep

Yeah

IDK, Westside Gunn, MF DOOM, Jay Electronica

Liner Notes:

No, it's not Chance.

And no, it's not Kanye either.

And while it will sound like both make an appearance, this is a multi-colab led by IDK – who I was introduced by my nephew Ben... solid talent.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Bitch, you ain't never been naked on the seashore
Put money on your head, spend the rest up in Dior
Paris, me and Don C sittin' front row
Elephant drum on the forty, she ain't Dumbo
Hole in your forehead, I'm talking jumbo
I'm feeling like Shawn, I might shoot a 1-0
Please no sparklers, baby I'm a legend
Standin' on the couch Ace bottle and a Desert

Riddle me this, riddle me that
Got the whole world and why we exist finally mapped
The rich kids get all the girls and all the ass
While the broke boys walk with the world, kickin' they back, yeah
She say she want a five-star meal (yeah)
If it come with head then it's a five-star deal
She say, shit, she just tried to hit me with a slap
I blocked my face with my hand, now it's a dap

No strings attached, I ain't tryna be a puppet, ya heard?
I'd rather be stung by bees than be fuckin' with birds
I say this shit all the time until I'm touchin' her curves
Or 'til it's time to pet the pussy like purr
Fecto, her fur, retro, her weave
Petro, her heels, Dries, don't fuck up the dress code
She don't need a nigga for shit, she got her own
But if he say he tryna pay, she like, "I ain't sayin' no"

Roses are red (yeah) violets are blue (ayy)
"Do you want me for money?" He found out when she said, "I do"
Too late (yeah) the pussy game too great
The pussy game too great, the pussy game too great (I said)
Roses are red (yeah) violets are blue (ayy)
"Do you want me for money?" He found out when she said, "I do"
Too late, the pussy game too great
The pussy game too great, the pussy game (crazy)

Ain't got no job but I stay sharp (yeah)
Can't pay my rent 'cause all my money's spent
But that's okay 'cause I'm still fly, da-da, da-da

Man, these hoes gettin' greedier, gettin' needier
Doin' stunts for the media, cloutin' serious
Bad bitch, yeah, but the mind state is hideous

Man, that ass look good with your Brazilian lift
The money like that shit, we tryna wife that shit
Might "first class on a Delta flight" that shit
Off tops, I ain't even have to write that shit, yeah
Lamar Odom with the stroke, girl, you got my dick
(Ha-ha, ha-ha-ha-ha, hard)
You like a Uber when you ride, I might buy your ass a
(Car-car, car-car-car-car, car)

Roses are red, violets are blue
"Do you want me for money?" He found out when she said, "I do"
Too late, the pussy game too great

Every Ertuğrul Bey need a Halime Sultan
To establish a tribe and build masjid roofs on
My life (my life) my sacrifice, my prayer and my death
Is all for the one God who spareth me breath
You could try and lie to yourself about the times
The war between God and Satan for altered minds
In the age of social media, Twitter, YouTube
Google and Wikipedia, pearls get tossed to swine

You stick with Dr. Fauci, I'm runnin' with Dr. Wesley
I'll never let the CDC come and finesse me
I never let the fake news from the press distress me
Even though the Devil would love to Malcolm X me
It's him again, with the tint skin tone breaching brimstone
Until the man of sin get everything that was meant for him
Just know one thing
And that's Allah sent me here to be King

Fentanyl Tester

JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown

Liner Notes:

I saw JPEGMAFIA this summer wiith the kids (at Pitchfork) and was completely mesmerized by both the energy and talent — so much so I made my way to the front row by myself a couple of songs into the set. A general rule of thumb for all concert goers... the experience is always better from up-front. And for those who may disagree, I can certainly vouch that it is significantly different — particularly when you're the only 40 something your eye can see.

For those of you that listened to old-school hip-hop in the late 80s, you'll certainly recognize the "It Takes Two" nod via JPEG in the first verse. The song (and entire album for that matter) is a joint collaboration with Danny Brown, who is no less talented.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I wanna rock right now
Hittin' whippets and eating halal
Get to clippin' while whippin' these sounds
You get hit, you gon' sing like Bilal, uh
Back it up
See that bitch, I'm actin' up
'Cause something right here ain't adding up

All lyrics:

I know you want it
The thing that makes me
You know I'm just sayin' man, ah (what the guys, guys go crazy for)

Is it the car, the clothes, the money, the jewelry, the cribs, the drugs or the hoes?
Is it the ket', the meth, the weed, the lean, the molly, the boi or the blow?
You can get rocked like Chrisean
How you hating and broke, no fixin' 'em
Riding dick like these rappers are Sybians
Try to press 'em, they lost like Gilligan

I got Jay for my Bey
'Bout the money, call me Mr. Slate
Weirdo rap, I'm the numero ace
Put together like Danity Kane

Fuck your feelings, I'm stuck in my ways
Local niggas be stuck in they place
They don't say none of that shit to my face
'Cause they know I take shots like Klay

I wanna rock right now
Hittin' whippets and eating halal
Get to clippin' while whippin' these sounds
You get hit, you gon' sing like Bilal, uh
Back it up
See that bitch, I'm actin' up
'Cause something right here ain't adding up
Smack it up
One hunnid, ain't no wack in us

Push it to the maximum
I do what I want to
Stay you ain't no accident
Mashing 'em, knocking 'em out park
The way we smacking 'em, immaculate
If I'm in area, that's hazardous
Way out there we too far gone
Leave me alone when I get in my zone

Just fall back, I'ma put you on
Lost out here, can't find no home
Goin' up, so tap in
I'm about to take you for a spin
So buckle up
Nigga, we about to go in
Hands on the wheel no accident
Hands on the wheel no accident

Came through kicking doors off hinges
Look at him, he's so expensive
Make her hop all in my mentions
When she see it, so extensive
Set it up, I'ma knock it all down
Give me a ring, I give you rounds
Lost and found, when you hear that sound
I just wanna see you jump around

Welcome to my house of pain
Where you can get everything
Coming down like April rain
Yes, you may just say my name
Pull up on me, we outside
I'm about to take you for a ride
No one's safe, so run and hide
No one's safe, so run and hide

Let me tell you what I'm gon' do
Tell no lies, just tell your truth
I'm a big dog like Marmaduke
Park itself when I come through
Pull up and I'ma be outside
I'm about to take you for a ride
No one's safe, so run and hide
No one's safe, so run and hide

Milkshake brings all the boys to the yard
And they're like, it's better than your-
Right it's better than yours
I can teach you, but I have to charge
My milkshake, milkshake, milkshake, milkshake
Milkshake, milkshake, milkshake, milkshake
Teach you, it's better than
Teach you, but I have to charge

My milkshake, milkshake, milkshake, milkshake
Milkshake, milkshake, milkshake, milkshake
Teach you, it's better than
Teach you-

Milkshake, milkshake, milkshake, milkshake
Milkshake, milkshake, milkshake, milkshake
Teach you, it's better than
Teach you, but I have to
My milkshake, milkshake, milkshake, milkshake
Milkshake, milkshake, milkshake, milkshake
Teach you, it's better than
Teach you, but I have to

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard
And they're like, it's better than yours
Damn right it's better than yours
I can teach you, but I have to charge
I know you want it, want it, want it, want it

Newcastle

Lankum

Liner Notes:

I spent some time in Dublin this fall with Grace and her girlfriend Jenny (see the liner notes for "End of the World"). Grace and I spent some time walking "Dublin Bay" — referenced in this song.

Lankum is a multi-instrumentalist Irish folk band from Dublin. It would be hard not to see the influence The Pogues have had (directly or otherwise) to any emerging Irish folk band.

Regardless, Lankum has captured that mysterious Celtic vibe that will truly mesmerize anyone willing to listen. I recommend finding yourself a quiet place to park your car one day, throwing your seat back, and listening to this song a couple times through. I may have done such a thing.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Why should I not love my love?
Why shouldn't my love love me?
Why should I not speed after her
Since love to all is free?

All lyrics:

Come you not from Newcastle?
Come you there far away?
Oh, met you not my true love
Who dwells near Dublin bay?

Why should I not love my love?
Why shouldn't my love love me?
Why should I not speed after her
Since love to all is free?

Her father, once my true friend
Now turns me from the door
Her mother owed me worthy
Now bids me love no more

Why should I not love my love?
Why shouldn't my love love me?
Why should I not speed after her
Since love to all is free?

Her squire, once my true friend
But now my rival be
While I, Willie, madly wail away
To sail the stormy sea

Why should I not love my love?
Why shouldn't my love love me?
Why should I not speed after her
Since love to all is free?

In spite of flame and danger
With her Willie, she will roam
My arms, her safe defenders
Her breast, my happy home

Why should I not love my love?
Why shouldn't my love love me?
Why should I not speed after her
Since love to all is free?

Kill Bill

SZA

Liner Notes:

This is going to feel like we took a sharp turn here.

But did we?

Relationships are hard. They come with the full spectrum of volatile and irrational emotions.

And they require a bit of maturity... of therapy... SZA gets it.

Also, Kill Bill is on my all-time-favorites film list, so win/win.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I'm so mature, I'm so mature
I'm so mature, I got me a therapist to tell me there's other men
I don't want none, I just want you
If I can't have you, no one should

All lyrics:

I'm still a fan even though I was salty
Hate to see you with some other broad, know you happy
Hate to see you happy if I'm not the one driving

I'm so mature, I'm so mature
I'm so mature, I got me a therapist to tell me there's other men
I don't want none, I just want you
If I can't have you, no one should
I might

I might kill my ex, not the best idea
His new girlfriend's next, how'd I get here?
I might kill my ex, I still love him though
Rather be in jail than alone

I get the sense that it's a lost cause
I get the sense that you might really love her
The text gon' be evidence, this text is evidence
I tried to ration with you, no murders or crimes of passion, but damn

You was out of reach
You was at the farmer's market with your perfect peach
Now I'm in the basement, planning home invasion
Now you laying face-down, got me singing over a beat

I'm so mature, I'm so mature
I'm so mature, I got me a therapist to tell me there's other men
I don't want none, I just want you
If I can't have you, no one will
(I might)

I might kill my ex, not the best idea
His new girlfriend's next, how'd I get here?
I might kill my ex, I still love him though
Rather be in jail than alone

I did it all for love (love)
I did it all on no drugs (drugs)
I did all of this sober
I did it all for us, oh

I did it all for love (love)
I did it all of this on no drugs (drugs)
I did all of this sober
Don't you know I did it all for us? (I'll kill your ass tonight)

Uh, I just killed my ex (my ex)
Not the best idea (idea)
Killed his girlfriend next, how'd I get here?
I just killed my ex (my ex)
I still love him, though (I do)
Rather be in Hell than alone

DBZ

Your Old Droog

Liner Notes:

"DBZ" by Your Old Droog is a lyrical flex wrapped in anime nostalgia, name-dropping *Dragon Ball Z* while delivering his signature sharp wordplay over a hazy, boom-bap beat. Droog, known for his intricate rhyme schemes and low-key mystique (remember when the internet thought he was secretly Nas?), often weaves pop culture into his raps, and here, he channels the battle-hardened grind of a Saiyan warrior. While the exact inspiration behind the track isn’t explicitly documented, it fits seamlessly into his larger discography of cerebral yet streetwise bars. If anything, "DBZ" is a testament to Droog’s ability to smash together high-brow lyricism with childhood obsessions—proving that rap nerds and anime heads share more DNA than they might think.

No One Noticed

The Marías

Liner Notes:

"No One Noticed" by The Marías is a dreamy, melancholic track that encapsulates the band's signature blend of hazy vocals, sultry instrumentation, and introspective lyricism. While the band hasn’t explicitly detailed the song’s meaning, it carries a mournful sense of being overlooked or fading into the background—perhaps a meditation on lost love, personal struggles, or the fleeting nature of connection. The Marías are known for their cinematic, almost hypnotic sound, often channeling elements of jazz, psychedelia, and indie pop. Lead singer María Zardoya’s airy vocals float effortlessly over the track, giving it an almost ghostly quality. While "No One Noticed" doesn’t sample or cover another song, it feels like it could have existed in some parallel universe’s 1960s French film soundtrack—moody, mysterious, and effortlessly cool.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Try and stop me Try and save me I want to fall... Try and crush me Take me, teach me I want to fall I want to fall I want to fall... I want to fall I want to fall I want to fall...

First Day of My Life - Companion Version

Bright Eyes

Liner Notes:

This is somewhat of a throwback to Favorites 2005, where Bright Eye's "First Day of My Life" first appeared on the compilation.

Well, 17 years later and Conner Oberst has re-imagined the song with an electronic flare and a distinctly tight beat. I typically don't like remixes, but this one maintains that bright-catchy-vibe throughout.

A love story... well, the beginning of one.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

So if you wanna stick with me
With these things there's no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I'd rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery

Besides, maybe this time is different
I mean, I'm really feeling lucky

All lyrics:

This is the first day of my life
Swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

Yours was the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
And I don't know where I am, I don't know where I've been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I'd let you know
Yeah, these things take forever, I especially am slow
But I realized that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning?
And I thought it was strange, you said everything changed
You felt as if you'd just woke up

And you said
"This is the first day of my life
I'm glad I didn't die before I met you
But now I don't care, I could go anywhere with you
And I'd probably be happy"

So if you wanna stick with me
With these things there's no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I'd rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery, ah-ha, mm-hmm

Besides, maybe this time is different
I mean, I really think you like me

JUGGERNAUT (feat. Lil Uzi Vert & Pharrell Williams)

Tyler, The Creator,Lil Uzi Vert,Pharrell Williams

Liner Notes:

I'm in and out of the hip-hop scene, but Phineas has kept me apprised. Tyler seemed to be his own live show of the year... I forwent the show, but enjoyed the album.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Hey, Ms. Parker
Wait, wait, wait, wait
Somethin' like (uh-oh)
I just cut some fresh lemons, where's the sugar?
Lemon in my 'ade, lemon in my ears, call 'em boogers
Rather six feet 'fore I'm ever seen with you niggas (hold up)
Yeah

What it is? It's that nigga T, skin look colored in (woo)
Ridin' in, double-double R, that's that Cullinan (yeah)
Pullin' in that four hundred grand, I just ordered this (yeah)
Switzerland, Lake Geneva, where I spend my summer in (true story)
GOLD Le FLEUR, that's Gianno shoe, what I'm runnin' in
Earlobe look like headlights on a minivan (Gangsta Grillz)
I'm so motherfuckin' dead-ass, I need some Timberlands (woo)
I battle any man, Uzi Vert, don't think they understand (yeah, yeah)

Uh (skrrt, cool), double C on my feet
Double G on my freak (ooh), Louis V by my brick
She wan' kick it with me, she better eat it then leave (leave, whoa)
She try save all the plates but keep eatin' my meat
We can't see none of 'em, grow, she keep eatin' my seeds (woo)
Got a E and a B on the back of the CT
I'm done with the 12, got a V16
Uh, say the money comin' in, yeah, that's true
The more money I get, I don't wan' sex you
Can't think about the last time that I text you
It's probably when sidekicks had them belt loops
Sign my John Hancock on a bitch every time I check you
Just like a brand new Lamb', I wreck you, uh
So if it's mine, it's yours, woo, woo, woo

Ride to the dinner tapin'
Out of time and imagine her in the exit
Last year, more than what Google say my net is
I got cheddar with the chef in the tinted exit (like whoa)
Uh, uh, uh

It's the double P, I rock double C
Man, I run them beats like you run in cleats
Man, come to me, you want somethin' to see
This internally flawed, that's a double Vs
What troubles me is you couple me
With these subtle fleas tryna double league
Hornet trapped in the hive
Of a motherfuckin' bumblebee
They just got the closest picture of the fuckin' sun surface, that was us
Got the LaFerrari, park that bitch just for one purpose, catchin' dust
My Secret Service carry mops, you call 'em street sweepers, back you up
Tat' you up then add you up, then give you a cover like Adwoa
If the shit's fake, I don't respect it
It's clickbait and that's distaste like a shit shake
What a difference your wrist make when it's Richard-made
Hungry eyes tend to fixate like a empty stomach for a fish plate
Shit-faced, get this straight, this is truck wheels, deck, grip tape

Ride to the dinner tapin'
Out of time and imagine her in the exit (why you even talkin' to us?)
Last year, more than what Google say my net is (God damn)
I got cheddar with the chef in the tinted exit
Uh, uh, uh (bitch)

Vigilante Shit

Taylor Swift

Liner Notes:

This one goes out to my girls who every year ask if I'm including a T. Swift song. Well, here you go. I guess I needed Taylor to show her vigilante side. (And while I'm not 100%, I'm pretty sure this is her first appearance on the favorites.)

FAVORITE LYRIC:

And I don't dress for villains
Or for innocents
I'm on my vigilante shh again

I don't start it, but I can tell you how it ends
Don't get sad, get even
So on the weekends
I don't dress for friends
Lately I've been dressing for revenge

All lyrics:

Draw the cat eye, sharp enough to kill a man
You did some bad things, but I'm the worst of them
Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last lie
They say looks can kill and I might try
I don't dress for women
I don't dress for men
Lately I've been dressing for revenge

I don't start it but I can tell you how it ends
Don't get sad, get even
So on the weekends
I don't dress for friends
Lately I've been dressing for revenge

She needed cold hard proof so I gave her some
She had the envelope, where you think she got it from?
Now she gets the house, gets the kids, gets the pride
Picture me thick as thieves with your ex-wife
And she looks so pretty
Driving in your Benz
Lately she's been dressing for revenge

She don't start it, but she can tell you how it ends
Don't get sad, get even
So on the weekends
She don't dress for friends
Lately she's been dressing for revenge

Ladies always rise above
Ladies know what people want
Someone sweet and kind and fun
The lady simply had enough

While he was doing lines
And crossing all of mine
Someone told his white collar crimes to the FBI
And I don't dress for villains
Or for innocents
I'm on my vigilante shh again

I don't start it, but I can tell you how it ends
Don't get sad, get even
So on the weekends
I don't dress for friends
Lately I've been dressing for revenge

The Hillbillies

Baby Keem, Kendrick, Lamar

Liner Notes:

I had the opportunity to see Kendrick and Baby Keem perform together a year and a half ago. This was no doubt one of the best shows I've ever seen.

For those of you that don't know, they are cousins.

And for those Bon Iver fans, if you listen closely, you'll hear a sample from the song "PDLIF".

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Huh, she's organic, skin is glowin', my heart is goin' (like wow)
Split personality, two phones, two emotions (like how?)
Girl, you get the notion
It's not hard to notice

All lyrics:

I don't buy much, I buy land, bro
Cologne, Germany
Four McDonalds, every time I land, bro
Big Jay Rocks in both hands, bro, and all that
And I'm best dressed, movin' forward, yeah
Tiny Taz Arn', yeah, all that, Compton cowboy, all that
Yeah, big protein
One-hundred and fifty grams of protein (uh)
Y'all gotta stop playin', bro, I swear, bro

Uh, we gon' fuck up the world
Excuse me, but is that your girl?
If she tell, that's a good referral
Heebee-jeebie talk crazy to me
But Kendrick know I like irregular girls
I'm not good with the regular girls
Damn near want a veteran girl

I just might change your life
We ain't wearin' no Giuseppe jeans
We ain't doin' none of normal things
Do you know what formal means?
Critics sayin' that I lost the plot
Principles, yeah, I'd rather not
Messi, 'bout to come in hot

'Dot, uh, we gon' fuck up the world
Excuse me, but is that your girl?
Didn't mean to possess your girl
Baby, I'm high-profile, don't ever tell 'em you met me, girl
They gon' think that you rep me, girl
5'7", I'm Messi, girl

I'ma pass you to Neymar, he got time for your bestie, girl
Niggas know that I'm best-dressed, too high-profile to access
I ain't even gotta fact check, all I'm wearin' is Wales Bonner
Feelin' good, I might wear no-
Matter of fact, let's stay platonic

I just fucked, ain't that ironic?
You could pick the bunk or bed
Either way, I'ma want some head
Messi live through me instead
We grew up 'round triflin' hoes
You ain't did nothin' that I don't know
It's cool, baby, I'm too high-pro'
I'm Baby Keem, I wouldn't call it close

Messi, get them girls off the stage, 'cause somebody's gonna get taken
Somebody's gonna invade on a one-on-one conversation
I'm ducked off from the world, I'm immersed in the PlayStation
And I ain't worried 'bout her, it's a thousand hers out waitin'

We gon' fuck up the world
Excuse me, but is that your girl?
Didn't mean to possess your girl
Baby, I'm high-profile, don't ever tell 'em you met me, girl
They gon' think that you rep me, girl
5'7", I'm Messi, girl

Famous, but I'm not for sale, why you tryna possess me, girl?
I mean, you know what upset me, girl
Was like that when you met me, girl
'Cause he'll put you in princess shoes
Elevate you, respect you too
Here's 10K, I'm in a sexy mood
Don't let the homies touch you, move

Yeah, niggas know that I'm best-dressed
Wear Martine when I board jets
They sardines and I'm big fish, eat caviar when I'm depressed
Take selfies, I'm in Czech Republic, Cornell, he gon' check the budget
Borrowed two-million from my cousin
Never gave it back, 'cause it's nothin'

Fuck it (yeah), new devotions (uh-huh)
Huh, keepin' focus, starship, is that a foreign? (A foreign)
Huh, she's organic, skin is glowin', my heart is goin' (like wow)
Split personality, two phones, two emotions (like how?)
Girl, you get the notion (aroused)
It's not hard to notice (yeah, yeah)
That's a deep, deep, deep, deep, deep ocean (that twat)
Shorty say she celibate, I'ma keep hopin' (she's not)
Shorty say she in love with me, I'ma be open (I'll try)
(And you w-, and you w-)

Messi, get them girls off the stage, 'cause somebody's gonna get taken
Somebody's gonna invade on a one-on-one conversation
I'm ducked off from the world, I'm immersed in the PlayStation
And I ain't worried 'bout her, it's a thousand hers out waitin'

vampire

Olivia Rodrigo

Liner Notes:

My guess is that given a little time, this one will find its way into the "break-up" canon.

There are a few vampire references throughout this chapter. Rumor is that vampires got a new publicists this year.

As Def Leopard once said... "Love Bites".

Ouch.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naive
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, famefucker
Bleedin' me dry, like a goddamn vampire

All lyrics:

Hate to give the satisfaction, asking how you're doing now
How's the castle built off people you pretend to care about?
Just what you wanted
Look at you, cool guy, you got it

I see the parties and the diamonds sometimes when I close my eyes
Six months of torture you sold as some forbidden paradise
I loved you truly
Gotta laugh at the stupidity

'Cause I've made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should've known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naive
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, famefucker
Bleedin' me dry, like a goddamn vampire

And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news
You called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called them crazy too
You're so convincing
How do you lie without flinching? (How do you lie, how do you lie, how do you lie?)

Ooh, what a mesmerizing, paralyzing, fucked-up little thrill
Can't figure out just how you do it, and God knows I never will
Went for me, and not her
'Cause girls your age know better

I've made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should've known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you've made me look so naive
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, famefucker
Bleedin' me dry, like a goddamn vampire

You said it was true love, but wouldn't that be hard?
You can't love anyone, 'cause that would mean you had a heart
I tried you help you out, now I know that I can't
'Cause how you think's the kind of thing I'll never understand

I've made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should've known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naive
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, famefucker
Bleedin' me dry, like a goddamn vampire

CATFISH

Doechii

Liner Notes:

DOECHII's track **"CATFISH"** is a sharp, playful banger that delves into the duality of online personas versus reality—essentially calling out the phonies who present one image on the internet but don’t measure up in real life. Known for her chameleonic style and fearless confidence, Doechii uses the song to flex her lyrical dexterity while keeping things fun and braggadocious. While there’s no direct sample at play, the track’s bouncy, bass-heavy production and catchy flow owe a debt to Southern rap’s influence, a signature vibe in much of her work. Doechii, often dubbed the "Swamp Princess" for her eclectic aesthetic, has been making waves as one of the most dynamic rising stars in hip-hop, and "CATFISH" is another example of why she refuses to be put in a box—online or off.

Hello Miss Johnson

Jack Harlow

Liner Notes:

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Finally, I'm letting go of all my downer thoughts In no time there'll be one less sad robot Looking for a chance to be something more than just metal Now I'm going part time with a film projectionist And she's the vinyl queen from the surfer dream She likes the beach boys more than radio metal And she's so good But she's no good for me Oh, Miss Delaney Whats the matter? You waited by the window (You waited by the window) I waited by the door Oh, Miss Delaney Wheres your boyfriend? He isn't up in heaven So why treat him like he's dead? Like he's... It's not that everyday Everyday is comming up with the green grass But the times pass When I think of you whenever I'm at dinner Finally, I've found someone to duel this lonely sea I don't spend my nights searching for earthquakes Oh, it's biblical how fucked my sleep can be But she won't sleep with me Oh, Miss Delaney Whats the matter? You waited by the window Waited by the window I waited by the door Oh, Miss Delaney Wheres your boyfriend? No, he isn't up in heaven So why treat him like he's dead? Like he's dead, like he's dead From here you can't find everything Erin, I would never lie to you Oh, Miss Delaney, Miss Delaney Whatcha sad for? Well, you waited by the window And I was kicking down your door Oh, Miss Delaney Wheres your boyfriend? Wheres your boyfriend? He isn't up in heaven So why treat him like he's dead? Oh, Miss Delaney

Being In Love

Wet Leg

Liner Notes:

A punk-ish nod to the sadistic-ish qualities that come with "being in love".

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I need a lie down
Only just got up
I feel so uninspired
I feel like giving up
I feel like someone has
Punched me in the guts
But I kinda like it
'Cause it feels like being in love

All lyrics:

I need a lie down
Only just got up
I feel so uninspired
I feel like giving up
I feel like someone has
Punched me in the guts
But I kinda like it
'Cause it feels like being in love

Being in love
Being in love
Being in love

I lost my appetite
I cannot sleep at night
I cannot concentrate
I do not feel too great
The world is caving in
And I'm kinda struggling
But I kinda like it
'Cause it feels like being in love

Being in love
Being in love
Being in love
Being in
La la la la, la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la

I tried to meditate
But I just medicate
Pour me another drink
Don't wanna have to think
I think I lost my shit
Some kind of fucked up trip
But I kinda like it
'Cause it feels like being in love

Being in love
Being in love
Being in love
Being in love
Being in love
Being in love
Being in love
Being in
La la la la, la la la la la

Lost Cause

Billie Eilish

Liner Notes:

Such talent.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Something's in the-

Something's in the air right now
Like I'm losing track of time
Like I don't really care right now, but maybe that's fine
You weren't even there that day
I was waitin' on you
I wondered if you aware that day was the last straw for me and I know

I sent you flowers
Did you even care?
You ran the shower and left them by the stairs
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh
Ay-ay-ay-ay, ay, ay

Thought you had your shit together, but damn, I was wrong
You ain't nothin' but a lost cause
And this ain't nothin' like it once was
I know you think you're such an outlaw
But you got no job
You ain't nothin' but a lost cause
And this ain't nothin' like it oncе was
I know you think you're such an outlaw
But you got no job

I used to think you were shy
But maybe you just had nothing on your mind
Maybe you were thinkin' 'bout yourself all the time
I used to wish you were mine
But that was way before I realized
Someone like you would always be so easy to find
So easy (so easy)
He-hee, mm-mm-mm, mm

Gave me no flowers
Wish I didn't care
You'd been gone for hours
Could be anywhere
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

Thought you would've grown eventually, but you proved me wrong
You ain't nothing but a lost cause
And this ain't nothing like it once was
I know you think you're such an outlaw (yeah)
But you got no job
You ain't nothing but a lost cause
And this ain't nothing like it once was
I know you think you're such an outlaw (think you're such an outlaw)
But you got no job

What did I tell you?
Don't get complacent
It's time to face it now, na-na, na-na, na-na
What did I tell you?
Don't get complacent
It's time to face it now, na-na-na

Love More (By Fiona Apple)

Sharon Van Etten, Fiona Apple

Liner Notes:

I didn't realize there were two Van Etten songs on the Favorites this year until I was doing this writeup. But this one honestly feels more like 2021 Fiona Apple. And appropriately so, Apple and Van Etten weave their brashly mesmerizing vocals together as if they are one.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Chained
To the wall of our room
Yeah you chained me like a dog in our room
I thought that's how it was
I thought that we were fine
Then the day was night

You were high
You were high when I was doomed
And dying for
With no light
With no light

Tied to my bed
I was younger then
I had nothing to spend
But time on you
But it made me love
It made me love
It made me love more

It made me love
It made me love
It made me love more

Do what you said
The words she said left out
Over unto the sky where I'll soon fly
And she took the time
To believe in
To believe in
What she said and
She made me love
She made me love
She made me love more

She made me love
She made me love
She made me love more

Oysters In My Pocket

Royel Otis

Liner Notes:

Here's proof that you can create a roll-down-the-windows-catchy tune with just about any lyric you can imagine.

I mean...

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Oysters in the pocket
We're saving for lunch
Not that we are shellfish
We just haven't learnt much

All lyrics:

Oysters in the pocket
We’re saving for lunch
Not that we are shellfish
We just haven’t learnt much

Oh well that’s miles away
Oh well that’s miles away

Couldn’t take the fourby out
The peddies too much
Send me on my bicycle
The chain is all rust

Oh well that’s miles away
Oh well that’s miles away

Paying off the limousine now
We’re in no rush
Tried to give my number away
But I haven’t heard much

Oh well that’s miles away
Oh well that’s miles away

Oysters in the pocket
We’re saving for lunch
They say that you waste
But we’re having more fun

Oh well that’s miles away

namesake

Noname

Liner Notes:

Noname is my favorite female rap artist.

With next-level word play, subtle shade, and level-setting awareness, Noname's brilliance comes though (seemingly) effortlessly here with her namesake.

This one is about independence while carrying a bit of "hurt" underneath it... the "Well, fine... I don't need you!" control move we make when feeling abandoned/hurt.

Been there. Guessing you have too.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Noname, where she came?
We could stand in the rain
Maintain a good life, we could fry plantain
Same day the airstrikes strike down Iran
I ran into the house with a blunt in my hand, let's smoke
I don't wanna see death no more, let's fight
They got the devil hiding in plain sight
That's you, that's me, the whole world is culpable
Why complacency float the boat the most?

All lyrics:

Itty bitty titty committee
The world with me, your girl with me
And I don't even really like pussy
That's the homie
Tony Island call Poseidon
Cry me a river, you could cry me a metaphor
A megaphone, screaming out
Dream about revolution, air pollution
Same solution, socialism
They ain't really fucking with my niggas though

Off the grid, we just love the community garden
Off the grid, you could be a martian 'round here
Settle down here, we could love, love
Drive up to the motherland and learn about what was
And if the world don't budge, then eat me out, sweetie
I wanna smile tonight, I only got one lap around the sun
And he going down tonight, yeah, yeah
So maybe I'm going down too
Yeah, maybe I'm going down too

Yo, I never need no man
I got a little bit of love and a couple of friends
Picture me rolling up the bud in the south of Sudan
Yo, I never need no, no, no

Yo, I never need no man
I got a little bit of love and a couple of friends
Picture me rolling up the bud in the south of Sudan
Yo, I never need no, no, no

Noname, where she came?
We could stand in the rain
Maintain a good life, we could fry plantain
Same day the airstrikes strike down Iran
I ran into the house with a blunt in my hand, let's smoke
I don't wanna see death no more, let's fight
They got the devil hiding in plain sight
That's you, that's me, the whole world is culpable
Why complacency float the boat the most?
I don't really get it, y'all ain't really with it

All that eat the rich, tax the rich, y'all ain't really about that shit
Bitch, if you want some money, you can say that
You deserve the payback 'cause niggas took everything
Let's go get that and take it to the hood though
Share it with community, we soldiers in plain clothes

Everybody got their role, don't be an opp
Everybody got their roles, I'm a play mine
Like Scooby-Doo in a haunted house
I see the ghost that they talking 'bout, I see the signs
Read in between the line at the crime scene
I ain't fucking with the NFL or Jay-Z
Propaganda for the military complex
The same gun that shot Lil Terry
Out west the same gun that shot some Samir in the West Bank
We all think the Super Bowl's the best thing

Go, Rihanna, go
Watch the fighter jet fly high
War machine gets glamorized
We play the game to pass the time
Go, Beyoncé, go
Watch the fighter jet fly high
War machine gets glamorized
We play the game to pass the time

Go, Kendrick, go
Watch the fighter jet fly high
War machine gets glamorized
We play the game to pass the time
Go, Noname, go
Coachella stage got sanitized
I said I wouldn't perform for them
And somehow I still fell in line

Fuck, I never need no name
I got a little bit of love and a memory lane
Picture me rolling up the bud, I don't play them games
Yo, I never need no, no, no
Uh, I never need no name
I got a little bit of love and a memory lane
Picture me rolling up the bud, I don't play them games
Yo, I never need no, no, no

Zero Sum

The Smile

Liner Notes:

"Zero Sum" by The Smile is a haunting, cinematic closer to their 2024 album *Wall of Eyes*, drenched in melancholic strings and Thom Yorke’s signature existential lament. While Yorke is notoriously cryptic about song meanings, the title itself nods to game theory—suggesting a world where one person’s gain is another’s loss, a fitting theme for his usual meditations on power, corruption, and societal decay. The track unfurls like a slow-motion reckoning, with Johnny Greenwood’s orchestral arrangements adding a ghostly beauty reminiscent of his film scores. Interestingly, some fans have drawn parallels between the song’s mood and Yorke’s *Suspiria* soundtrack, and honestly, you can almost imagine Tilda Swinton eerily gliding through a dimly lit corridor to it. If this is The Smile’s version of a grand finale, it’s the kind that leaves you staring at the credits, pondering the meaning of existence.

Right on Time

Brandi Carlile

Liner Notes:

Have you read and/or listened to Brandi's new biography? It's called Broken Horses: A Memoir and is 100% worth the time. (Note: I recommend the audio book as she reads it – plua she plays a few tunes in between chapters.

Pure talent.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Come back now, even if you call me out
You might be angry now, of course you are
I'm scared to, didn't mean to take it out on you
I know I always do, you're the strongest person in the room

Turn back time, help me to rewind and we can
Find ourselves again

It's not too late
Either way, I lose you in these silent days
It wasn't right
But it was right on time

Don't look down, I can feel it when your heart starts pounding
It's beyond your control, you know it is
It's getting to the point where I can't carry on
I never held my breath for quite this long
And I don't take it back, I did what I had to do

It's not too late
Either way, I lose you in these silent days
It wasn't right
But it was right on time

It's not too late
Either way, I lose you in these silent days
It wasn't right
But it was right on time

Mad At Me

Samia, papa mbye

Liner Notes:

Samia has out-scheduled me again. She's on my "still to see" list and I've now had tickets to three shows that I've either I've been sick and/or out of town.

Still, one of my favorite additions to the emerging sad-girl-music canon. She earned two spots on this year's favorites.

And yeah I know, she's going a little pop-py here. I blame papa.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Hiding is easy, it's like a daydream
You can be nowhere all the time
Hurts to be somewhere, 'cause you gotta stay there
After you say what's on your mind

All lyrics:

Couldn't afford to, why would I want to
Pick up the glass I'm stepping around?
You shut the door as soon as I whispered
"Do you ever wish you weren't a coward?"

Are you still
Mad at me?
Are you still
Mad at me?

Hiding is easy, it's like a daydream
You can be nowhere all the time
Hurts to be somewhere, 'cause you gotta stay there
After you say what's on your mind

Are you still
Mad at me?
Are you still
Mad at me?

I don't wanna know, I don't
I don't wanna know anymore
I don't wanna know, I don't
Anymore, anymore

Why you gotta stay so private?
Everything you think, so violent

So violent (oh)

I kept it right behind us, yeah (ooh)
And I shouldn't have to sit around here watch you play with fire
That bitter taste, so, so sweet, so full of memories
Hey, John Doe, notice me
Clear the cache, watch your feet, keep going

Are you still (on and on and on and on and on and on and on)
Mad at me? (It's going on and on and on and on and on and on and on)
Are you still (it's going on and on and on and on and on and on and on)
Mad at me? (It's going on and on and on, on and on and on, I don't wanna)

I don't wanna know, I don't
(Mad at me?) I don't wanna know anymore
(Are you still) I don't wanna know, I don't
(Mad at me?) Anymore, anymore

Playing with similar themes of the prior, Dehd belts our back and forth tendencies.

Dehd made an appearance in 2020 with "Desire". On my list to see live.

Measure of a Man (feat. Central Cee)

FKA twigs,Central Cee

Liner Notes:

I'm pretty sure that every year FKA Twigs has released something, it has landed on the Favorites.

I'm consistently impressed.

Also, this sounds like it should have been on the new Bond film.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Nobody feels the pain behind the love you show
Nobody feels the burden that is yours alone
If when the morning comes you're not with me (destiny)
I know that you'll return with destiny

Only you can truly understand
The measure of a hero is the measure of a man
(I wanna kiss it better, the measure of a man)
The measure of a man
(I wanna kiss it better, the measure of a man)

Your body bears the scars of every man I know
So softly I wanna kiss it better, the scarlet letter
To me you don't belong
If when the morning comes you're not with me (destiny)
I know that you'll return with destiny

Only you can truly understand
The measure of a hero is the measure of a man
(I wanna kiss it better, the measure of a man)
The measure of a man
(I wanna kiss it better, the measure of a man)

It's the manners that make a man
But the hammers that break a man
Damn, they wanted to see me broke
But I flipped the script and I broke the pen
Young and wealthy
Don't let it overwhelm me
I still give thanks, still can't tell me
Nothin', the system failed me, I still bounced back
I run this ting, got a lot of endurance
What you know about drastic measures?
I married the hustle
Me and the game like Harry and Meghan
Some man in my hood too jealous
Why do you think that we carry a weapon?
Take time and trust the process
Life's a game of chess, not checkers
Told bro that, "You gotta stop stressin'
Gotta stop thinkin' you won't get through it
It's all in your mind, I failed a couple of times
I got up and got back to it"

Only (only) you can (you can) truly (truly) understand
The measure (measure) of a (of a) hero is the measure of a man
The measure of a man

Only you can truly understand
The measure of a hero is the measure of a man
The measure of a man, ohh

Little Plastic Castle - Tune-Yards Remix

Ani DiFranco

Liner Notes:

While I wasn't officially sending out my "favorites" in 1998, I was making mix-CDs and Ani Difranco's "Little Plastic Castle" was on it.

I did get a chance to see her play live finally this past year with Emily and Ellie as she opened for Brandi Carlyle.

And while she did play this classic from the archive, it was NOT this version. When this came across my recommended songs this past year, I was quite surprised, but I loved it!

This remix comes courtesty of the Tune Yards.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

In a coffee shop in a city
Which is every coffee shop
In every city
On a day which is every day

All lyrics:

In a coffee shop in a city
Which is every coffee shop
In every city
On a day which is every day

I picked up a magazine
Which is every magazine
Read a story then I forgot it right away

And they say goldfish have no memory
I guess their lives are much like mine
And the little plastic castle
Is a surprise every time
And it's hard to say if they're happy
But they don't seem much to mind
(Yee-haw)

From the shape of your shaved head
I recognized your silhouette
As you walked out of the sun and sat down
And the sight of your sleepy smile eclipsed all the other people
As they paused to sneer at the two girls from out of town
And I said, "Look at you this morning
You are by far the cutest
But be careful getting coffee
I think these people want to shoot us
Or maybe there's some kind of local competition here
To see who can be the rudest"
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

People talk about my image
Like I come in two dimensions
Like lipstick is a sign of my declining mind
Like what I happen to be wearing
The day that someone takes a picture
Is my new statement for all womankind
And I wish they could see us now
In leather bras and rubber shorts
Like some ridiculous new team uniform
For some ridiculous new sport
Quick someone call the girl police
And, and file a report
(Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, uh)

In a coffee shop in a city
Which is every coffee shop
In every city
On a day which is every day

Making The Band (Danity Kane)

Earl Sweatshirt

Liner Notes:

Earl Sweatshirt is recognized as somewhat of a rap prodigy — having released his first track in the 7th grade and then having his first official release at the age of 16, thanks to Tyler the Creator (who produced his first album Earl). Earl Sweatshirt (who's real name is Thebe) is significantly influenced by his parents — who are both scholars in their own right. His mother teaches "Critical Race Theory" at UCLA and his father, Keorapetse Kgositsile, was a renowned South African poet and political activist.

His lexicon is subsequently quite deep. School is in session.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

What is the plan, fuck is you sayin'?
Lil' momma off Danity Kane
Been geeked up, how many days? Yeah
What is the plan, fuck is you sayin'?
How many bands I'm finna make?

All lyrics:

What is the plan, fuck is you sayin'?
Lil' momma off Danity Kane
Been geeked up, how many days? Yeah
What is the plan, fuck is you sayin'?
How many bands I'm finna make?
Feel like Diddy standin' in a bank
I feel like Diddy dancin' in the rain
You yappin', I'ma go in your face
Bruce Banner, how I handle the rage
(you wouldn't like me when I'm angry) yeah
Loose cannon, enemy of the state
Gene Hackman, we gettin' away
Two hammers, how we get in the safe, uh
Do damage in a critical way
Boof packin', we ship it away
You mad, got 'em feelin' the wave, yeah
Too bad, hunnid dollar eighths
If I don't got the time or the space
sixteen-passenger plane, uh
Sistine Chapel, I pray
Fish cheeks snap on a bait
Chipped teeth, snack on the prey, uh
Stampede crackin' the gates
Blow money fast just like a game
Go through the cash like it's a phase, uh

What is the plan, fuck is you sayin'?
Lil' momma off Danity Kane
Been geeked up, how many days? Yeah
What is the plan, fuck is you sayin'?
How many bands I'm finna make?
Feel like Diddy standin' in a bank
I feel like Diddy dancin' in the rain
You yappin', I'ma go in your face
Bruce Banner, how I handle the rage
(you wouldn't like me when I'm angry)
Loose cannon, enemy of the state
Gene Hackman, we gettin' away
Two hammers, how we get in the safe
Do damage in a critical way
Boof packin', we ship it away
You mad, got 'em feelin' the wave
Too bad, hunnid dollar eighths
If I don't got the time or the space
sixteen-passenger plane
Sistine Chapel, I pray
Fish cheeks snap on a bait
Chipped teeth, snack on the prey
Stampede crackin' the gates
Blow money fast just like a game
Go through the cash like it's a phase

Modesto

Pedro The Lion

Liner Notes:

"Modesto" by Pedro the Lion is a somber, introspective track off *Phoenix* (2019), an album steeped in David Bazan’s nostalgia for his childhood and adolescent years. The song reflects on the bittersweet experience of touring—particularly the sense of emotional dislocation that can come when a city like Modesto is just another dot on the map. Bazan is a master of turning mundane moments into existential reflections, and here, he captures the loneliness and yearning that often accompany life on the road. Fun fact: Pedro the Lion originally disbanded in 2006, with Bazan continuing as a solo artist before resurrecting the moniker in 2017. If there's one thing he does better than writing heartbreaking songs, it’s making you feel like you lived them yourself.

WE PRAY - Single Version

Coldplay

Liner Notes:

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Lights go out and I can't be saved Tides that I tried to swim against You've put me down upon my knees Oh I beg, I beg and plead, singing Come out of things unsaid Shoot an apple off my head And a trouble that can't be named A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singing You are You are Confusion never stops Closing walls and ticking clocks, gonna Come back and take you home I could not stop that you now know, singing Come out upon my seas Cursed missed opportunities Am I a part of the cure Or am I part of the disease, singing You are, you are You are, you are You are, you are And nothing else compares Oh, oh no nothing else compares And nothing else compares You are You are Home, home where I wanted to go Home, home where I wanted to go Home, home where I wanted to go Home, home where I wanted to go

Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel

Bright Eyes

Liner Notes:

I mean, I've always respected Conor Oberst's ability to write/compose, but I've never been some huge fan (likely attributed to his relational reputation). But for whatever reason, I could have put numerous Bright Eyes songs on this year's favorites. Here's the second that completes this "relational carousel" triilogy. The one that got left out? "Nothing Gets Crossed Out".

FAVORITE LYRIC:

The castle walls has grown so tall
Seem there ain't no hope at all
To reach the top, you gotta stop
For breathin'
But I ain't gonna try to make you cry
The tear drops couldn't find your eye
It's all been swell, Miss Carousel
But the time has come for leavin'

Won't you come and get me when
You're sure that you don't need me then
I stand outside your window
And proudly call your name

All lyrics:

The drunken clown's still hanging round
But it plain the laughter's all died down
The tears you tried so hard to hide
Are flowin'
A blind man with his knife in hand
Has convinced himself that he understands
I wish him well, Miss Carousel
But I gotta be a-goin'

Won't you come and get me when
You're sure that you don't need me then
I stand outside your window
And proudly call your name

The ladies been told that all of gold
Is worth so much it can't be sold
No time to weep she'll need her sleep
Tomorrow
When she carries her face to the market place
And bets it on the opening race
She can ring her bells, Miss Carousel
But her singing brings me sorrow

It's always done every mother's son
Is shown that grown men never run
And so they fight with all the might
Inside them
When the battle's been fought and they all been taught
That the trick is just not being caught
Will you give them hell, Miss Carousel
When they're begging you to hide them

When the need arose your eyes fell closed
You clamped your fingers round your nose
Would you say that's any way
To judge him
You haven't got the authority
To kill him in the first degree
But would you feel compelled, Miss Carousel
If you have something to begrudge him

On a velvet beach far beneath the reach
Of those that come to pray and preach
The natural man who tries to stand
Is fallin
How long will it be before he sees
You own his legs but his mind is free
Only you can tell, Miss Carousel
How long will he be crawling?

The castle walls has grown so tall
Seem there ain't no hope at all
To reach the top even though you stop
For breathin'
But I ain't gonna try to make you cry
The tear drops couldn't find your eye
It's all been swell, Miss Carousel
But the time has come for leavin'

Spitting Off the Edge of the World

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Perfume Genius

Liner Notes:

This is off of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's new album Cool it Down and features the insanely talented favorites alumn Perfume Genius (also on my "still to see" list). The Yeah Yeah Yeah's Karen O said this about the track:

"I see the younger generations staring down this threat, and they’re standing on the edge of a precipice, confronting what’s coming with anger and defiance,” she said. “It’s galvanizing, and there’s hope there.”

I think my favorite track on this side of the compilation.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Mama, what have you done?
I trace your steps
In the darkness of one
Am I what's left?

Silver lines whisper to me
"Wounded arms must carry the load"

(And the kids cry out)

We're spitting off the edge of the world (out in the night)
Never had no chance (nowhere to hide)
We're spitting off the edge of the world (nowhere to run)
Never had no chance (out comes the sun)
Spitting off the edge of the world

All lyrics:

Cowards, here's the sun
So bow your heads
In the absence of bombs
Draw your breath

Dark, dark places shall be none
She's melting houses of gold

We're spitting off the edge of the world (out in the night)
Never had no chance (nowhere to hide)
Spitting off the edge of the world (out comes the sun)
Never had no chance (nowhere to run)

Mama, what have you done?
I trace your steps
In the darkness of one
Am I what's left?

Silver lines whisper to me
"Wounded arms must carry the load"

We're spitting off the edge of the world (out in the night)
Never had no chance (nowhere to hide)
We're spitting off the edge of the world (nowhere to run)
Never had no chance (out comes the sun)
Spitting off the edge of the world

Winds from the sky (never had no chance)
Will watch us rise

Rainforest

Noname

Liner Notes:

Favorite female hip-hop artist.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

How you get closer to love?
How you lemonade all your sadness when you openin' up?
How you make excuses for billionaires you broke on the bus?
I need niggas around me rollin' up and smokin' me up

Because, because a rainforest cries
Everybody dies a little
And I just wanna dance tonight
And I just wanna dance tonight
Ah, yeah

He my little baby Medusa, tippin' the juice up
I go back and forth in an Uber, travel for two months
I'm the emptiest hallelujah, open my chest up
It's a rabbit inside my hat, angel all dressed up

Lookin' to bless up at the milk and the honey gates
I make money for money sake, I been writin' a hundred days
Took the wretched out the earth and called it baby Fanon
I know my shoulder blades are shattered wings that carry me home

I said baby, come on, you know this flesh is only temporary, brittle as bone
Why don't you empty out your love for me, then chisel the stone?
These are ten black commandments, a property loan
'Cause every bladed grass of earth, we don't actually own
"I am the I am", says Sam, am I?
The universe bleeds infinity, you got one life

Uh, yeah, how you get closer to love?
How you lemonade all your sadness when you openin' up?
How you make excuses for billionaires you broke on the bus?
I need niggas around me rollin' up and smokin' me up

Because, because a rainforest cries (cries)
Everybody dies a little (everybody dies a little)
I just wanna dance tonight
I just wanna dance tonight (I just wanna dance tonight)

If you think you love me, then bury me when the sun up
Faded with the homie, he pearlin' another blunt up
Talkin' to Muhammed like, "Niggas don't really trust us"
Dyin' on stolen land for a dollar like that ain't fucked up

It's fuck they money, I'ma say it every song
Until the revolution come and all the feds start runnin'
Fuck a goodwill hunting, this is brand new murder
Revolutionary suicide, then close the curtain

You ain't seen death, I can hear the blood on the moon
These niggas put a flag upon it, all they do is consume
Only animal that ravage everything in its path
They turned a natural resource into a bundle of cash

Made the world anti-black, then divided the class
Now the rich niggas is rich niggas with your bread
Really bitch niggas with big figures, some cokeheads
These bitches is cokeheads, man (uh), fuck a billionaire, nigga

How you get closer to love?
How you lemonade all your sadness when you openin' up?
How you make excuses for billionaires, you broke on the bus?
I need niggas around me rollin' up and smokin' me up

Because, because a rainforest cries (cries)
Everybody dies a little (everybody dies a little)
I just wanna dance tonight (dance)
I just wanna dance tonight

Chemtrails Over The Country Club

Lana Del Rey

Liner Notes:

What a great title. What a great voice. What a great song.

And if you're wondering what a "chemtrail" is... it's the smoke streak left by planes in the sky, which conspiracy theorists believe are poisonous chemical agents dispersed by the government.

This one goes out to Grace (you'll know why).

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

I'm on the run with you, my sweet love
There's nothing wrong contemplating God
Under the chemtrails over the country club
Wearing our jewels in the swimming pool
Me and my sister just playing it cool
Under the chemtrails over the country club

Take out your turquoise and all of your jewels
Go to the market, the kids' swimming pools
Baby, what's your sign?
My moon's in Leo, my Cancer is sun
You won't play, you're no fun
Well, I don't care what they think
Drag racing my little red sports car
I'm not unhinged or unhappy, I'm just wild

I'm on the run with you, my sweet love
There's nothing wrong contemplating God
Under the chemtrails over the country club

Wearing our jewels in the swimming pool
Me and my sister just playing it cool
Under the chemtrails over the country club

Meet you for coffee at the elementary schools
We laugh about nothing as the summer gets cool
It's beautiful how this deep normality settles down over me
I'm not bored or unhappy, I'm still so strange and wild

You're in the wind, I'm in the water
Nobody's son, nobody's daughter
Watching the chemtrails over the country club
Suburbia, The Brentwood Market
What to do next? Maybe we'll love it
White picket chemtrails over the country club

My love, my love

Washing my hair, doing the laundry
Late-night TV, I want you only
Like when we were kids under chemtrails and country clubs
It's never too late, baby, so don't give up
It's never too late, baby, so don't give up
Under the chemtrails over the country club, yeah (you're born in December and I'm born in June)
You're born in December and I'm born in June (under the chemtrails over the country club, yeah)

My Cancer is sun and my Leo is moon
My Cancer is sun and my Leo is moon

Sugar Babies

Spoon

Liner Notes:

When Anna moved out, it left some "empty spaces" — one of which was the living room, which simply had my piano in it. Phineas has been upping his game on the piano for the past year and has "officially" surpassed myself as the better pianist — particularly reading music, speed, complexity. It's impressive.

Anyway, he made the comment about how "grand" the piano sounded without any furniture in it and while I've added a few chairs, I've largely left it empty and converted it to a "music room" — including a full drum set courtesy of David Haskins.

I've now hosted a few different friends / musicians for various "jam sessions" over the past few months.

This song reminded me of some of these moments as it is certainly the most "jammy" song I came across this year. This is also perfect for any "summer playlist".

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Listen now you don't know what you've got
You left it to no choice what you got
What you got

All lyrics:

Don't you worry when the late stars at night
Light the way for sugar babies
I remember yesterday before their houses and their planes
Before they touched the hand of fate sugar babies

They want know how much they've changed
They wanna know how I feel about it
Do I think they seem the same
Or do I hear their voicеs talking to them

At the bar, don't forget lеs au revoirs les sugar babies
They saw me in the storefront standing still
They walked on by they couldn't chill
They'll say hello next time now maybe

Listen now you don't know what you've got
You left it to no choice what you got
What you got

Til that boy says where's your credentials
Now where's your credentials
Now where's your credentials
I want to know
Whoa
Whoa
I want to know

They wanna know how much they've changed
They wanna know how I feel about it
Do I think they look the same
Or do I hear their voices talking to them

Sayin where's your credentials
Now where's your credentials
Where's your credentials
I want to know
Whoa
Whoa

Hey

TIL FURTHER NOTICE (feat. James Blake & 21 Savage)

Travis Scott

Liner Notes:

An unlikely collab that I couldn't resist. James Blake has appeared a few times on the favorites, but this is Travis Scott's debut (alongside 21 Savage).

I have Phineas to thank for keeping me rooted in the hip-hop scene — much of which is reflected throughout this collection.

The questions here are self evident, and persistent.

And familiar.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Where will you go now?
Now that you're done with me
Where will you go now?
Now that you're done with me

All lyrics:

Where will you go now?
Now that you're done with me
Where will you go now?
Now that you're done with me
I don't blame you
You should be done with me
I don't blame you
You should be done with me

Why won't you even talk about it?
Or even hear about it?
Or even feel about it? (Metro)
Like the covers come off in the eve
We don't have to lie
We don't have to lie right here
And it's alright
I should've waited somehow
I shouldn't have pushed so hard
I always push too hard
And now it's just a blackout
And now it's just a blackout
(Somehow)

My mama always told me, "Put yourself first"
I don't really fall in love with women, man, 'cause love hurt
I hit a couple broads, I can't lie, I put my dick first
Now you runnin' 'round playin' payback and that shit hurt

I should've treated you better (21)
Used to deal with lames 'til she ran into a stepper (on God)
Big dawg Savage, I'm a Zone 6 repper (21)
Niggas throwin' salt, but the Draco came with pepper (straight up)
She say we ain't goin' nowhere 'cause all I do is sext her (on God)

Woah, never knew that I had to propose, no (21)
I was fine with you bein' one of my hoes, for sure (on God)
She said she seen us bein' somebody goals, what are those? (21)
I thought about givin' you the key to my heart, but it's froze

Where would you go now?
Now that you're done with me
Where would you go now?
Now that you're done with me
Where would you go now?
Now that you're done with me?
Where would you go now?
Now that you're done-
'Til further notice (ah-ah)
'Til further notice (ah-ah)
'Til further notice (we'll keep you posted)
'Til further notice (I'll keep you posted)

if energy makes energy
X-rated love, X-rated love
If energy makes energy, makes energy
X-rated love, X-rated love

You know the love was X-rated, it's how we made it
Drinkin' help balance the patience, watch how you take it
Can't keep no bitches, it's too dangerous, I been X-rated
Took everything up for the takin', I couldn't save it
See red and blues, I hit the pavement, got love, got vacant
She needed angles, I need angels, I'm fightin' Satan
Leave me faded, I feel painless, I go out gracious

I'm tryna feel a shade of greatness by celebratin'
Bring entertainment, goin' brainless, like goin' dumb on my hiatus
She fall more in love every time that I tip
I fade away every time that I-

Take a sip, I been goin' off the rip
I been bumpin' more Coldplay, the world cold as shit
I know one thing 'bout the old one, can't have more fun with it
Knew exactly how to roll one and how to tote a stick
Even if she at the shows, show she never let 'em hit
Always knew she always on one and I can bear with it
Yeah, I can bear with it

Where will you go now?
Now that you're done with me
Where will you go now?
Now that you're done with me
Where will you go now?
Now that you're done with me
Where will you go now?
Now that you're done-
'Til further notice
'Til further notice
'Til further notice (we'll keep you posted)
'Til further notice (I'll keep you posted)

Bored

Waxahatchee

Liner Notes:

"Bored" by Waxahatchee is a standout track from *Tigers Blood*, Katie Crutchfield’s 2024 album that leans even further into her love of classic Americana and Laurel Canyon-style introspection. A jangly, almost deceptively peppy song, “Bored” is laced with lyrical ennui—it's a simmering meditation on dissatisfaction and emotional stagnation. Crutchfield has spoken about the album reflecting a sense of contentment and self-assurance, but “Bored” feels like the moment where even stability can start to feel like a rut. Sonically, it has a breezy, Tom Petty-esque swagger (not surprising, given she enlisted MJ Lenderman and Brad Cook to help craft the record’s warm, rootsy vibe). With her signature mix of plainspoken poetry and melody, Crutchfield turns mundane restlessness into something quietly anthemic—proof that even boredom, in the right hands, can sound beautiful.

Stay

Valerie June

Liner Notes:

While this is Valeri June's first appearance on the yearly Favs, she is no stranger to the industry – making music since the early 2000s. June hails from Memphis and has one of the more captivating voices I've hard in some time. Thanks to Ben Peterselli for the rec.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Oh, I, I don't know
How long I'll stay
And oh, I, I can't tell
You lied that way

So if you can believe it
Since the day we first met
I've had not one regret
Darling, don't you forget
So if you can believe it
Times I's lost, I's upset
I gambled, thought I'd lost it
Having you in my life was a sure bet

If you can believe
If you can believe it

Held tight, felt right
They give, they take
We've had our fights
Both made mistakes

So if you can believe it
Since the day we first met
I've had not one regret
Darling, don't you forget

So if you can believe it
Times I's lost, I's upset
I gambled, thought I'd lost it
Having you in my life was a sure bet

If you can believe (oh, I, oh, I, oh, I)
If you can believe (oh, I, oh, I, oh, I)
If you can believe (oh, I, oh, I, oh, I)
If you can believe (oh, I, oh, I, oh, I)

(Oh, I, oh, I, oh, I)
(Oh, I, oh, I, oh, I)
(Oh, I, oh, I, oh, I)
(Oh, I, oh, I, oh, I)
And oh, I, I don't know
How long I'll stay

Soft Spot

Claud

Liner Notes:

I saw Claud open for Phoebe Bridgers this summer with Emily, her best friend Claud (different Claud), and Ellie. During the set, Claud Mintz (lead singer, also from Chicago burbs) points out their parents in the crowd. I turned around to see and realized that I was the same age. I then scanned the crowd and realized that I (along with their parents) were undoubtedly the oldest people I could see around me.

Sigh.

A song about those awkward moments after a breakup.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I know we don't talk right now
But if I saw you, I'd sit down
And ask about your afternoon

You told me that it's over now
But I can't help that I think about
All the things that we used to do
'Cause I've got a soft spot
I've got it for you

All lyrics:

This sounds kinda strange, I thought
I saw you at a party but
I finally got close, it wasn't you

I know we don't talk right now
But if I saw you, I'd sit down
And ask about your afternoon

You made it clear that it's over now
But you're all that I think about
So now I don't know what the hell to do
'Cause I've got a soft spot
I've got it for you
It for you

We used to lie in bed and talk
For hours about everything
And anything you said you wanted to

Pull the covers over our short hair
Pretend like the city wasn't there
Like it was only just us two

You told me that it's over now
But I can't help that I think about
All the things that we used to do
'Cause I've got a soft spot
I've got it for you
It for you

I wish I left all my things at your place so I could come get them
We'd do things we might regret
And say that we could make exceptions
I just can't take the rejection
Maybe I'm just second-guessing

'Cause I've got a soft spot
I've got it for you
It for you
It for you
It for you
It for you

Numb

Sylvan Esso

Liner Notes:

I'm hoping that Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Timberello (a.k.a. "The Postal Service") get their royalties as the intro of this track is working the same vibe as their "Nothing Better" intro.

But numb... yes, been there.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Oh, baby, baby
Wanna give you a chance
Let me show you a brand-new dance
Not for everybody
It's a way to romance
Just watch me do it
You call it

Shaking out the numb
Let me feel something
Shaking out the numb
Shaking out the numb

Give me hot water
Give me freezing air
Give me the gossip
And a reason to care
Shaking out the numb
Shaking out the numb

Not as easy as your ABC's
Gotta move your body like a kid, you see
Only pay attention to you and me
Forget about the breaking and the heat

Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Let me feel something (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Let me feel something (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Shaking out the numb
Shaking out the numb

Shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake
(Shake out the numb)

Dancing pins and needles then
Up there moving with your friends
Shaking to remember
Shaking to pretend
Shaking to believe in
Shaking to forgive

Shaking for the force
Shaking through the sea
Shaking for your mother and your father, dizzy
Shaking for the faking
Shaking for babies
Shaking for the shaking
Shaking set you free

Shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake (shaking set you free)

Shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake (shaking set you free)

Shaking out the numb
Let me feel something
Shaking out the numb
Shaking out the numb

Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Let me feel something (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)

Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Let me feel something (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Shaking out the numb (shake, shake, shake, shake)
Shaking out the numb

Belize (feat. MF DOOM)

Danger Mouse, Black Thought, MF DOOM

Liner Notes:

I've always wanted to create a "Black List" (and no, this is not a race reference) companion list that is a highly curated list of songs that should find its way into a film score or soundtrack one day. This song would be on it.

Sadly, the feature here, MF Doom, is post-humous as the highly celebrated British underground-hip-hop artist passed in 2020. I love how DOOM remembers Estrada's name some dozen verses down.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

DOOM get rude with the dude off Chips
The mood switch, he chewed off strips off a brewed witch
Danger make him groove off a glitch
Makes your boo booty twitch and the crew rich, bitch
Always wanted to say that
Ever since the days in hallways tauntin' a stray cat
The one he often frequently slapped around
All the while, waited then graduated, cap and gown
Hated the rap sound
Debated the crap until he felt he had it mapped out
Enough to have the game trapped abound
Scratched the crown off the names of lames who yapped the noun
Or verb for that matter
Had no data for a herbal chat chatter
Oh, Erik Estrada

All lyrics:

Away from you

Yo, I'm sick, no lymph nodes is swollen
They told me even when the records skip, keep it rolling
On his shoulder like a California highway patrolman
Launch codes was stolen and sold by Ed Snowden
Then I fled to Rome and told 'em address me as a Roman
I'm still in photos, posted with my own omen
A thumping kicker for me to slam like Hulk Hogan
It's something like a plane bumper sticker, no slogan
This something for the shooters and back-and-forth commuters
Who never knew the difference in laws and jurisprudence
I feel as though it's safe to assume that you the students
Are non congruent to the way that me and DOOM do this
You checking the top-two of a thousand intelligent chaps
With rap projects in housing developments
Cool the cross-legged on a crate like it's elegant
Try to hate, I'm puffing up your face like a pelican
Highly enveloped in, activating my melanin
Y'all failin' to see what's shaken besides gelatin
News bullets and I refuse to take the medicine
Fuck a thick skin, I got me an exo-skeleton
The black Colin Farrell in The Lobster
That living like an obstetrician but not a doctor
Bring the Cambridge, the Websters, the Oxfords
The picture too long to watch, see the synopsis
Compensated for playing nice, it's optics
Product of the last poets and the watched prophets
Ock, stop it, it's beyond out-of-pocket
Dunzo, I hit the gun show and got a rocket
Catastrophic, supreme microphone is
In Mexico, we the legendary dos cojones
Brothers both components of the close to coldest
Court holders with bars as hard as Angola

Away from you

DOOM get rude with the dude off chips
The mood switch, he chewed off strips off a brewed witch
Danger make him groove off a glitch
Makes your boo booty twitch and the crew rich, bitch
Always wanted to say that
Ever since the days in hallways tauntin' a stray cat
The one he often frequently slapped around
All the while, waited then graduated, cap and gown
Hated the rap sound
Debated the crap until he felt he had it mapped out
Enough to have the game trapped abound
Scratched the crown off the names of lames who yapped the noun
Or verb for that matter
Had no data for a herbal chat chatter
Oh, Erik Estrada
Fat rat, the mask made him batty as a mad-hatter
Known for his absurd word choices
And will ignore you if you ask him if he heard voices
Look, the energy is crazy
Far as he's concerned, the enemy was lazy
Hm-hm-hm, your attention please
Freeze, he came to seize the free cheese
Before he flees to Belize
In case you forgot to mention squeeze these
Just keep it on a need-to-know basis
They knew he was a negro so no need to show faces
Back in the days of no laces
On a slow pace, they used to say he might, could go places
Meh, whatever the case is
The card he played was Ace of Spades but no races
A spastic, some call him loony
When he spit a tomb sarcastic, it's Paul Mooney

Away from you
Away from you

Pan and Broom - Eve Maret Remix

Bright Eyes

Liner Notes:

Bright Eyes has made a bit of a comeback on the favorites over the past few years.

Oberst has gone a bit "electronic" with his latest projects, which I've appreciated.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Out of the blue
Saw you fall down the stairs
It was me pushing you
Innocence
Tell me the truth
Is that blood on your hands
Or just chocolate and fruit?

All lyrics:

One, two, three
One, two, three

Out of the blue
Saw you fall down the stairs
It was me pushing you
Innocence
Tell me the truth
Is that blood on your hands
Or just chocolate and fruit?

That isn't what I heard
This world went down in flames and man-made caves
An island of lepers
That's no kind of place to stay

Came into view
I just fly through the light
Like the dust in the room
Reminisce
Walk through the zoo
And I sweep up my dreams
With a pan and a broom

Not sure what comes after
Life just went down a drain of rainy days
Way up in the rafters
I float where the organ fades

If it's not all that important then why make a fuss at all?

Just whistle a tune
While you're digging a grave
On a hot afternoon
Happiness
Left here too soon
With a map and a bag
On a plane to Tulum

Best medicine's laughter
What a practical joke we have to play
Let's wait for the rapture
Man the phone banks, we're talking snakes

If it's not all that important then why make a fuss at all?

"Michael, everything's under control"

Younger & Dumber

Indigo De Souza

Liner Notes:

I'll admit. This is pushing the bounds of my pop-meter, but I had a deep appreciation for Indigo's struggle here.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Which way will I run when I want something new?
I don't feel at home in this house anymore
Which way will I run when I'm over you?

All lyrics:

When I was younger, younger and dumber
Built like a flower
You came to pick me from out of the city
You turned me sour

When I was younger, younger and prouder
I was nobody
You came to hurt me in all the right places
Made me somebody

Which way will I run when I want something new?
I don't feel at home in this house anymore
Which way will I run when I'm over you?
I don't feel at home in this town

Sometimes, I just don't wanna be alone
And it's not 'cause I'm lonely
It's just 'cause I get so tired of filling
The space all around me

And the love I feel is so powerful
It can take you anywhere
And the love I feel is so very real
It'll drag you down, oh, oh

Which way will I run when I want something new?
I don't feel at home in this house anymore
Which way will I run when I'm over you?
I don't feel at home in this town

When I was younger, younger and dumber
I didn't know better

Before

Wye Oak

Liner Notes:

"Before" by Wye Oak is a shimmering exploration of memory and identity, wrapped in the band’s signature blend of dream-pop and indie rock. The song, from their 2020 EP *No Horizon*, finds Jenn Wasner reflecting on the way our past selves shape who we become—sometimes hauntingly, sometimes beautifully. Fueled by Wasner’s ethereal vocals and Andy Stack’s dexterous production, "Before" moves with a hypnotic urgency, like a dream you’re trying to remember before it slips away. Wye Oak has long thrived in that space between melancholy and catharsis, and this track is no exception. While it may not have been widely covered, its lush soundscapes make it an evocative and deeply personal experience for listeners—a little sonic time capsule waiting to be cracked open.

VBS

Lucy Dacus

Liner Notes:

Home Video was the favorite album of the year... and with the most rotations. Thus, Dacus gets two slots on this year's favorites... this being the first.

For those who didn't grow up in the evangelical tradition, "VBS" = "Vacation Bible School" – which I did my fair share of participation. Plenty of shivering familiar memories emerged throughout this song... plus, it's just a great song.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

In the summer of '07 I was sure I'd go to heaven
But I was hedging my bets at VBS
The preacher in a t-shirt told me I could be a leader
Taught me how to build a fire and to spread the word

In the evening everybody went to worship and weep
Hands above our heads, reaching for God
Back in the cabin, snorting nutmeg in your bunk bed
You were waiting for a revelation of your own

Sedentary secrets like peach pits in your gut
Locked away like jam jars in the cellar of your heart
Waiting to be tasted and ultimately wasted
You were gonna win me over from the start

Your poetry was so bad
It took a lot to not laugh
You said that I showed you the light

But all it did in the end
Was make the dark feel darker than before

Your dad keeps his sleeves down through the summer for a reason
Your mother wears her makeup extra thick for a reason
When I tell you you were born and you are here for a reason
You are not convinced the reason is a good one

While you're going to sleep your mind keeps you awake
And it makes your heart beat fast and loud
There's nothing you can do but the only thing you found
Playing Slayer at full volume helps to block it out

Poetry was so bad
It took a lot to not laugh
You said that I showed you the light
But all it did in the end
Was make the dark feel darker than before
Dark feel darker than before
Dark feel darker than before

Talk to the Lord

Natalie Bergman

Liner Notes:

No it's not the same artist you just heard, but is there not a similar and particular vocal quality shared by Bergman and June? Two different people (I think DWH and Thom?) sent this album to me earlier in the year and I was immediately drawn in.

While Bergman doesn't position herself in any particular faith-based music scene, this may be the most overtly Christian/spiritual album ever featured here. Bergman suggests this sentiment emerged out of a long stay in a New Mexico monastery after learning of her father and step mother's death (during a performance) due to a drunk driver. This song came out of this time.

On a more personal note, there is a nod to my all-time favorite hymn and lyric, "Come Thou Fount", here... "Prone to wander..."

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

FATHER WHEN I'M LOST
I COME TO YOU
YOU WILL FAIL ME NOT
YOU WILL NOT FORSAKE ME
THOUGH I WALK IN SHADOWS I WON'T BE AFRAID
I WILL FEAR NO EVIL
FOR YOU WALK WITH ME

THOUGH I'VE SEEN SO MANY SORROWS
I SHALL NOT BE MOVED
GLORY HALLELUJAH
I WILL PUT MY FAITH IN YOU

WHEN YOU ARE SCARED
REACH OUT YOUR HAND
TALK TO THE LORD
TALK TO THE LORD
IF YOU ARE SAD
HE'LL DRY YOUR TEARS
TALK TO THE LORD
TALK TO THE LORD

HE WHO MAKES THE FLOWERS FACE THE SUN
AND ALL THE CREATURES SING
HE CAN MAKE THE HEAVENS RAIN
ALL THE CARPENTERS AND FISHERMAN
WE ALL BELONG TO HIM
JESUS IS OUR FRIEND

I AM PRONE TO WANDER
AND I HAVE GONE ASTRAY

LORD YOU ARE MY SHEPHERD
WON'T YOU LEAD ME TO YOUR GATES

WHEN YOU ARE SCARED
REACH OUT YOUR HAND
TALK TO THE LORD
TALK TO THE LORD

IF YOU NEED A FRIEND
CALL ON HIS NAME
TALK TO THE LORD
TALK TO THE LORD

IF YOU ARE THANKFUL AND YOU NEED TO SING
REACH OUT TO HEAVEN
TALK TO THE LORD

IF YOU ARE SAD
HE'LL DRY YOUR TEARS
TALK TO THE LORD
TALK TO THE LORD

Ready to Run

First Aid Kit

Liner Notes:

First Aid Kid first appeared on the Favorites in 2012 with "Emmylou". And while the indie folk sisters may sound like they hail from the south, they are actually Swedish.

The second song of this break-up-fleeting-themed triad.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

And I assumed you were someone
I could lean myself upon
But with the blink of an eye
You were out the door gone

So I've stopped making those conclusions
Thinking you could truly know someone
You peel a layer, find another
No you're never really done

All lyrics:

Oh we are sensitive people
Afraid to say the wrong thing
So I walk home alone
Recalling everything
Whole conversations
Play by play
I thought by this age
I'd always know what to say

But I've stopped making those conclusions
For all the nights that I've enjoyed
There's been a couple more that I've spent
Simply humbled by the void

And who did you think I was
When you first met me moons ago
When I wanted to kiss you forever
And babe you wanted to take it slow
Take it slow
Take it slow

Did I disappoint you
I'm pretty sure I did
You thought I was some kind of rockstar
I was a nervous little kid

And I assumed you were someone
I could lean myself upon
But with the blink of an eye
You were out the door gone

So I've stopped making those conclusions
Thinking you could truly know someone
You peel a layer, find another
No you're never really done

And who did I think you were
When we danced in the setting sun
When you said that you'd love me forever
And I was getting ready to run
Ready to run
Ready to run

Who did I think I was
As I narrowed in closer to the sun
And perhaps I'll feel like this forever
I'm always ready to run
Ready to run
Ready to run

Oh it's already begun
I'm getting ready
Ready to run

Oh it's already begun
I'm getting ready
Ready to run

Oh it's already begun
I'm getting ready
Ready to run

Ascension

Ka

Liner Notes:

For those who don't think they can be an artist and also hold another full-time job, meet Ka. Ka's a fire chief in Brooklyn but has been DYI'ing his music/albums for the last decade. And this year, he dropped two albums.

I stumbled upon "Ascension" via a radio playlist of Kendrick this year and was immediately drawn in to both the layered swells and the rich lyrics.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

A vet of unpleasant and misery
Jah bless, didn't digest what they fed us in history
Not too nice, see the true stripes of letters officially
Don't waste ink, I'm succinct, it's measured efficiency
...

Every mention is for hood ascension
May not be a good man but got good intention
Got good intention
May not be a good man but got good intention

All lyrics:

I mean, she was the one who was warm and you know, like, friendly to me
The one that I felt some kind of emotional ties to
And my father was, you know, just the opposite
He's like a cold motherfucker, he never spoke
You know he never really like showed any signs of emotion

A vet of unpleasant and misery
Jah bless, didn't digest what they fed us in history
Not too nice, see the true stripes of letters officially
Don't waste ink, I'm succinct, it's measured efficiency
Felt I had a curse first when I was bad at cursive
Baby sister named me and since was six, I had a purpose
Writings I drug cite in my court, I bought a surface
It comes from these meant to accompany, though they callin' 'em verses

Every mention is for hood ascension
May not be a good man but got good intention
Got good intention
May not be a good man but got good intention

I talk to you like a old uncle, that's my nuance
Got killed, couldn't build with my uncles, just my two aunts
Life grim, learn to fight and swim, Hopkinson and Dumont
When I moved from runaways, the last day I had true calm
As more I understand my posture, 'til I'm posthumous
'Til little me's thinking critically, I got no accomplishments
Descend to dark continents, center spark confidence
Correct the sea, speak of split second deeds, long consequence
If you a deep person, keep searching, amass facts
I believe they call him father, 'cause you supposed to get past that
If never won, run every one like it's the last lap
Handing ends to family and friends, never expecting that cash back
When you dorm with roaches, every day long as the solstice
I said parents ain't have no bread, I was born in ketosis
Always precocious, never quarreled with randoms, was drawing with focus
Since kids, they tried the colors 'cause only source is corpus
Heed to what they tried to feed they deceiving in doses
Bottom line, not the time for bikinis, Bellinis, mimosas
Never want war, but I'm for sure cleaning my toasters
'Cause when crabs don't go for roe, all I seem is ferocious

Every mention is for hood ascension
May not be a good man but got good intention
Got good intention
May not be a good man but got good intention
Every mention, hood ascension
Got good intention

(So, for as far as I was concerned, that was a man
That was how a man was supposed to be)
May not be a good man but got good intention
(So in order for me to be a man, I had to-)

On Division St

Nation of Language

Liner Notes:

I was at Pitchfork this summer with my kids awaiting Bon Iver's set when "Nation of Language" started playing this song. It was like New Order and The Cure had band sex and gave birth to this trio — who are, quite predictably, from Brooklyn.

And no, Jenni (Grace's girlfriend) and I searched long and hard to figure out if they actually sampled New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" but it's merely a similar bass line and synth arpeggios.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

You buried me
Right where I belonged
And still I'm waiting there
I'm waiting there

All lyrics:

You buried me
Right where I belonged
You buried me
Right where I belonged
And still I'm waiting there
I'm waiting there
I'm waiting there

On Division Street

I would like to find the answers I was always rudely denied
I would like to find the answers I was always rudely denied

A song so sweet
From back when I was born
The loving creak
Of floorboards by the door
Hopeful I waited, hopeful I called
But no one would answer at all

On Division Street

I would like to find the answers I was always rudely denied
I would like to find the answers I was always rudely denied

On Division Street

On Division Street

I would like to find the answers I was always rudely denied
I would like to find the answers I was always rudely denied

A&W

Lana Del Rey

Liner Notes:

Co-written and co-produced alongside Jack Antonoff, this track is arguably Lana Del Ray's most progressive to-date. It's effectively two songs. Stay with it — if not just to hear the classic TR-808 that kicks in to help transitions us.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I'm a princess, I'm divisive
Ask me why, why, why I'm like this
Maybe I'm just kinda like this
I don't know, maybe I'm just like this

I say I live in Rosemead
Really, I'm at the Ramada
It doesn't really matter
Doesn't really, really matter

All lyrics:

I haven't done a cartwheel since I was nine
I haven't seen my mother in a long, long time
I mean, look at me, look at the length of my hair
My face, the shape of my body
Do you really think I give a damn what I do
After years of just hearing them talking?

I say I live in Rosemead
Really, I'm at the Ramada
It doesn't really matter
Doesn't really, really matter

Call him up, come into my bedroom
Ended up, we fuck on the hotel floor
It's not about havin' someone to love me anymore
This is the experience of bein' an American whore

Called up one drunk, called up another
Forensic Files wasn't on
Watching Teenage Diary of a Girl
Wondering what went wrong
I'm a princess, I'm divisive
Ask me why, why, why I'm like this
Maybe I'm just kinda like this
I don't know, maybe I'm just like this

I say I live in Rosemead
Really, I'm at the Ramada
It doesn't really matter
Doesn't really, really matter

Call him up, he comes over again
Yeah, I know I'm over my head, but, oh
It's not about havin' someone to love me anymore
No, this is the experience of bein' an American whore

I mean, look at my hair
Look at the length of it and the shape of my body
If I told you that I was raped
Do you really think that anybody would think I didn't ask for it?
I didn't ask for it
I won't testify, I already fucked up my story
On top of this, so many other things you can't believe
Did you know a singer can still be
Lookin' like a side piece at thirty-three?
God's a charlatan, don't look back, babe
Puts the shower on while he calls me
Slips out the back door to talk to me
I'm invisible, look how you hold me
I'm invisible, I'm invisible
I'm a ghost now, look how you hold me now

It's not about havin' someone to love me anymore (oh, okay)
No, this is the experience of bein' an American whore
It's not about havin' someone to love me anymore
No, this is the experience of bein' an American whore

This is the experience of bein' an American whore
This is the experience of bein' an American whore

Jimmy, Jimmy, cocoa puff, Jimmy, Jimmy ride
Jimmy, Jimmy, cocoa puff, Jimmy, get me high (oh, my God)
Love me, if you love enough, you can be my light
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Your mom called, I told her you're fucking up big time

Your mom called, I told her you're fucking up big time

Jimmy, Jimmy, cocoa puff, Jimmy, Jimmy ride
Jimmy, Jimmy, cocoa puff, Jimmy, get me high
Love me, if you love enough, you can be my light
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Your mom called, I told her, you're fucking up big time

Jimmy, you should switch it up, maybe light it up (yeah)
Jimmy, if you leave the house, find me in the club (like)
Jimmy, if you switch it up, you should light it up
Jimmy, if you leave the house, find me in the club (surf's up)
Your mom called, I told her you're fucking up big time
But I don't care, baby, I already lost my mind
If you light it up, find me in the club
Your mom called, I told her you're fucking up big time

Jimmy, Jimmy, cocoa puff, Jimmy, Jimmy ride
Jimmy, Jimmy, cocoa puff, Jimmy, get me high
Love me if you love enough, you can be my light
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Jimmy only love me when he wanna get high
Your mom called, I told her you're fucking up big time

Mary Boone

Vampire Weekend

Liner Notes:

"Mary Boone" by Vampire Weekend is a sleek and enigmatic track from their 2024 album *Only God Was Above Us*, named after the legendary New York art dealer who helped define the downtown scene of the '80s. Ezra Koenig crafts a song that feels like a late-night wander through a fading Andy Warhol polaroid—opulent, chaotic, and tinged with existential dread. While the track isn’t a straightforward biography, it invokes Boone’s high-flying rise and dramatic fall (she served time for tax fraud in 2019) as a lens for exploring themes of ambition, decadence, and inevitable comedowns. Musically, it’s Vampire Weekend at their most brooding, with haunting piano lines and a sense of spectral nostalgia hovering over the whole track. If there's a lesson here, it might be that every scene has its heyday—and its reckoning.

Human

rum.gold

Liner Notes:

rum.gold (also the actual URL of his website) first made an appearance on the Favorites in 2020 alongside Jamilia Woods with "Waiting For". For those familiar, rum.gold has some serious Moses Sumney-like vocal vibes going on – which the music world could certainly use a little more of anyway.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I want you to be human

All lyrics:

You can sin however you'd like, baby
'Cause I wear mine on my sleeve
We can take forever or a minute, baby
It's all the same to me

Let down your fears
Take down your walls
It's only our shadows
That dance in the dark
Tell me no lies
Brace for the fight
I'll be your shelter in the night

Human
I want you to be human
I want you to be human
I want you to be free
And while you're here with me

Human
I want you to be human
I want you to be human
And there's no guarantees
But while you're hеre with me

I parted thе ocean to find you
Jumped from your Venus to your moon
Left a trail of tears to flow into your soul
And I am yours to choose

Let down your guard
Follow the signs
Teach me your game of hearts
It's all in your mind
Tell me no lies
Brace for the fight
I'll be your shelter in the night

Human
I want you to be human
I want you to be human
I want you to be free
And while you're here with me

Human
I want you to be human
I want you to be human
And there's no guarantees
But while you're here with me

Human (ooh)
Oh-oh (ooh)
Human (ooh)
I want you to be human (ooh)

Solid Heart

Gia Margaret

Liner Notes:

While not a stranger to the favorites, I was re-introduced this year via David Bazan and (hopefully) a forthcoming collab.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Starlight seeping in, creeping in
To my eye
Like the love that you held in yours
It feels so good, it makes it worse

With my hand towel
On your bed in the morning
Meditating was a quiet help
Your solid heart
Creeping out through the breath
And your body

Do we want to talk about
The year we did without?

And you can’t say anything now
A solid heart

And these days
All the sirens and city
Keep me awake like a bad dream lately
But I get, maybe, what I get
For leaving in the first place

Do we want to talk about
The year we did without?
And you can’t say anything now
A solid heart
A solid heart
A solid heart

Fly Little Crow

Rosie Thomas, Iron & Wine

Liner Notes:

It's good to have Rosie making music again.

While she is penning this for her children, there's something about the "little boy" and "little girl" references that don't seem to leave us. A blessing-of-sorts song about going out on your own.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Twirl little girl
Follow your heart, and be sure to guard it
Take care where you cast your pearls
Never settle little petal
Use your voice and stand up tall
Lead those flowers from the wall

All lyrics:

Fly little crow
High as a kite until you're breathless
Wild and bold like your mother's clothes
Little Rock may you roll
Slow and steady like the Cumberland River
May you wind down every road

Ask me all kinds of questions
I'll tell you everything I know
When I cannot find the answers
I'll help you find them on your own
Tell them girls they're more than pretty
Keep those mean boys on their toes
When you're wrestling with Jesus
May his love, with its push and shove
Be the thing you hold

Twirl little girl
Follow your heart, and be sure to guard it
Take care where you cast your pearls
Never settle little petal
Use your voice and stand up tall
Lead those flowers from the wall

Ask me all kinds of questions
I'll tell you everything I know
When I cannot find the answers
I'll help you find them on your own
Tell them girls they're more than pretty
Keep those mean boys on their toes
When you're wrestling with Jesus
May his love, with its push and shove

Days Like These

Low

Liner Notes:

There are a handful of artists present this year that are throw-back bands... Low being one of them – formed my senior year in high school (93), Low made a splash in the mid-90s low-fi indie rock scene and falls into a similar vein as frequent Favorites artist Pedro the Lion/David Bazan... who's first solo EP, Fewer Moving Parts' album cover was designed by Low band member Zak Sally.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

When you think you've seen everything
You'll find we're living in days like these
They say you only take what you bring
Maybe that's just the way they speak

Know that I would do anything
Is it something that I can't see?
Everybody just chased by dreams
That's why we're living in days like these again

It isn't something you can choose between
It isn't coming in twos and threes
Always looking for that one sure thing
Oh, you wanted so desperately

No, you're never gonna feel complete
No, you're never gonna be released
Maybe never even see, believe
That's why we're living in days like these again

Again
Again
Again
Again
Again
Again

Boyhood

The Japanese House

Liner Notes:

A song about pretending.

A song about regret.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I could have been somebody who
You wanted to have around to hold
I should have jumped when you told me to
I wanna change but it's nothing new

All lyrics:

I could have been somebody else
But I've been out looking for me
It doesn't matter what I tell myself
For a moment there I swear I saw me
I went to meet to somebody new
Changed beneath the evening light
And she held me kind of like you do
I hope you know

I could have been somebody who
You wanted to have around to hold
I should have jumped when you told me to
I wanna change but it's nothing new
And if I grow, I'm gonna get so old
Will you hold me like you always do?

I used to be somebody else
And I'm still out looking for me
I go out and try to chase myself
Find someone that might restore me
I could have been somebody new
And I'm talking to myself again
But I don't know who I'm talking to
I think it's you

I could have been somebody who
You wanted to have around to hold
I should have jumped when you told me to
I wanna change but it's nothing new
And if I grow, I'm gonna get so old
Will you hold me like you always do?

I could have been somebody who
You wanted to have around to hold
I should have jumped when you told me to
I wanna change but it's nothing new
And if I grow, I'm gonna get so old
Will you hold me like you always do?

The Blue

Kelly Reed

Liner Notes:

The second of two tracks in this year's compilation. As referenced earlier, I co-produced this album alongside Kelly a couple of years ago.

"The Blue" stood out to me the moment Kelly sent me the demo. Much like the prior track does for Lana Del Ray, this song showcases Kelly's own musical progression  — her ability to intricately compose and unleash sounds that practically force you to "feel".

Lyrically, this song (and album for that matter) was, in part, prompted by a news release Kelly came across about the tragic story of a Chicago woman that took her own life in 2016. But Kelly's up to more than just the retelling of a tragedy here. "The Blue" opens a window into a psychological state that, sadly, many have become familiar with (including myself) — feelings of being overwhelmed, exhausted and entrapped.

Here's to all the feels.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I'm just trying to try.

All lyrics:

Father, my limbs are too tired
Are you tying them down?
Won't you swing from your porcelain cloud
Or allow me to drown?
City street prophet said I don't have much longer to cry
I'm on my balcony late at night,
Planning my final demise.

Ooooh, I'm just trying to try.
Ooooh, I'm just trying to try.
Ooooh, I'm just trying to try.
Ooooh, I'm just trying to try.
Ooooh, I'm just dying to die.
Ooooh, I'm just dying to die.

Bells and Whistles

Bright Eyes

Liner Notes:

"Bells and Whistles" by Bright Eyes is a charmingly off-kilter entry in Conor Oberst’s vast songbook, blending his signature existential musings with an almost playful delivery. While Oberst hasn’t given a deep dive into the song’s precise meaning, it revels in his classic themes of disillusionment, self-awareness, and the absurdity of modern life—though with a wink rather than a full existential meltdown. Musically, the track features jaunty instrumentation that contrasts with its introspective lyrics, a move Oberst has perfected over the years. While it’s not a cover or built on a prominent sample, longtime Bright Eyes fans will appreciate how it echoes some of his early work while still feeling fresh. Think of it as Oberst doing what he does best: finding beauty in the mess, with just the right amount of theatrical flair.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

What's this hell? What's this pen? Put me in the hole with the rest of the men? Who you going to call at the station? "I need matrimony" said the captain to his pony: listening for motors (from the ditch then)... oh water in the town water in the sound - water takes the valleys and it puts them in the ground: oh no not again! Water by the trees water in the station (wherein the identification documents float from room to room): water from (and was birthed in) the birdland closed conservation. (said the shepherd) What's this hell? The earth does bend? Drown with the hunted and the hunter in his pen: la la I knew this man at the station (before the trucks disappeared) I need matrimony said the Cossack to his pony la la: listening for motors oh.. to party on the ground to puke on the ground to call your former mystic and you tell him he is found: not again! You were born last and forced to breathe (but not to) drown with the hunter in the coarse brown sleeve: not again! Oh running from the polis you were passing in the forest and condition myself to believe in operating forests: you better think about woodcutters and the burning of the station la la I hear the motors and I hear the matrons and I hear the (groaning of) the Polis with the blessed birdland patron (a sort of Patroclus of the ages) I know myself I know myself I was cut from evil fabric but my nurse knows better health: you better think about woodcutters and lights on: lights on!

So Unimportant

Ethan Gruska,Bon Iver

Liner Notes:

Ethan Gruska is better known as half of the Belle Brigade, but is likely better (not) known these days as the producer for Phoebe Bridgers first album Stranger in the Alps. And well, you haven't arrived in the alt-indie scene without a collaboration with Justin Vernon.

While both taking writing credits here, it's evident that Gruska's influence takes prominence as... well, the lyrics are in a fairly recognizable sentence structure. Gruska credits his writing influences to lyrical greats Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. And while it would take a lifetime catalog to truly land amongst these greats, I'll acknowledge that he/they have penned lyrics worth listening to (and the favorites).

FAVORITE LYRIC:

You watch me burn out like a rocket
I catch you mumbling it time after time
I just want all of it to stop your crying
I'll take the bribe now
It's so unimportant what started the fight

All eyes ahead
It's sadder at the end
I drink 'til I'm falling down and
I'm hanging on by a thread

All lyrics:

Don't look down
Hold up your head now
Hang on to your honor
Don't know why I've compromised you the most (the most)

You pull it closer
Don't make it hard now
If I remember one thing, it's
That I don't surprise you at all
Anymore

Is there something that you want to say to me?
Is there somewhere that you want to escape too?
I'll cling like a waterfall
While I don't recognize you at all
Anymore

You watch me burn out like a rocket
I catch you mumbling it time after time
I just want all of it to stop your crying
I'll take the bribe now
It's so unimportant what started the fight

All eyes ahead
It's sadder at the end
I drink 'til I'm falling down and
I'm hanging on by a thread

Is there something that you want to say to me?
Is there somewhere that you want to escape to?
I'll cling like a waterfall
While I don't recognize you at all
Anymore

You watch me burn out like a rocket
I catch you mumbling it time after time
I just want all of it to stop your crying
I'll take the bribe now
It's so unimportant what started the fight

Hurt

Arlo Parks

Liner Notes:

Arlo was featured last year on the favorites with "Eugene", which also happens to be on this album.

Btw, sucks to be Charlie.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Charlie drank it 'til his eyes burned
Then forgot to eat his lunch
Pain was built into his body
Heart so soft, it hurt to beat

Oh, wouldn't it be lovely to feel somethin' for once?
Yeah, wouldn't it be lovely to feel worth somethin', huh?

I know you can't let go
Of anything at the moment
Just know it won't hurt so
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much

Charlie melts into his mattress
Watching Twin Peaks on his ones
Then his fingers find a bottle
When he starts to miss his mum

Wouldn't it be lovely to feel somethin' for once?
Yeah, wouldn't it be lovely to feel worth somethin', huh?

I know you can't let go
Of anything at the moment
Just know it won't hurt so
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much

Charlie started seeing stars so stuck on the new Jai Paul
Said my clothes are sticking to me and I can't quite see my walls
Started dreaming of a house with red carnations by the windows
Where he didn't feel so small so overwhelmed by all his flaws

I know you can't let go
Of anything at the moment
Just know it won't hurt so
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much

I know you can't let go
Of anything at the moment
Just know it won't hurt so
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much

I know you can't let go
Of anything at the moment
Just know it won't hurt so
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much forever
Won't hurt so much
Won't hurt so much

Laughing With

Kishi Bashi

Liner Notes:

A Regina Spektor cover...

But it's true... nobody does.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one's laughing at God when they're starving or freezing or so very poor
No one laughs at God when the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one's laughing at God when it's gotten real late
And their kid's not back from that party yet

No one laughs at God when their airplane start to uncontrollably shake
No one's laughing at God when they see the one they love
Hand in hand with someone else and they hope that they're mistaken
No one laughs at God when the cops knock on their door and they say
"We've got some bad news, sir"
No one's laughing at God when there's a famine or fire or flood

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies said He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they're about to choke
But God can be funny
When told He'll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious, ha-ha
Ha-ha

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one's laughing at God when they've lost all they've got
And they don't know what for
No one laughs at God on the day they realize
That the last sight they'll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one's laughing at God when they're saying their goodbyes

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
When the crazies said He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they're about to choke
But God can be funny
When told He'll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one's laughing at God in hospital
No one's laughing at God in a war
No one's laughing at God when they're starving or freezing or so very poor

No one's laughing at God
No one's laughing at God
No one's laughing at God
We're all laughing with God

Second Nature

Bon Iver

Liner Notes:

Such a great song. Such a mediocre movie.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Is this our first? Or second nature?
When's that rapture? Will there be merch?

All lyrics:

Is this our first? Or second nature?
When's that rapture? Will there be merch?
Where is mother? She was a stunner, can we page her?
What my eyes have seen could really take the purse
Are we charged now? Or are we fakers?
Parade around or get in work? Or just desert?

We will see you next time
There'll be water in the rain
Territories pay fines
All long day (say it will be! Say it will be!)
All may not be just fine! (All long day!)
There is another fate away
To not be too late and obfuscate

Is this our fault? And are we just too damn used to it
The cypher too elusive, that tale, it just won't stop
You could be vaguely on top, strike the key, lay down the mop
As if endings ain't endings and feet they just won't drop
Ain't this real-time? And aren't we takers?
You want what's more and don't excuse
And just refuse

We will see you next time (Is this mercy?)
They'll be water in the rain
Territories pay fines
All long day (say it with me! Say it with me!)
All may not be just fine! (All long day!)
There is another fate away
To not be too late

We will see you next time
There'll be water in the rain
Territories pay fines
All long day (say it with me! Say it with me!)
All may not be just fine! (All long day!)
There is another fate away
To not be too late and obfuscate

Johnny Dang (with Paul Wall & DRODi)

That Mexican OT

Liner Notes:

I mean... can you imagine someone rapping any faster?

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I'm just rhyming words I don't even know how to rap

All lyrics:

Tobi just do it
Ayo is that Mexican OT?
That good dope, got me, looking, just like Johnny Dang

Louis Vuitton umbrella when I walk through the rain
In the kitchen whipping chicken counting bread like Canes
Good dope got a Mexican looking like Johnny dang
Knee deep in muddy water still carrying my K
Right pocket got money left pocket cocaine
Bullet proof white Cadillac riding in a tank
Ima dirty bay baby from dirty bay with a dirty k
Slide down ya block light it up in flames

Chopping down the block while the lac doing jumping jacks
Smoking on a wood yellow timber like a lumberjack
Suppressor on a mac10 sounding like its bubblewrap
Throw the TV in the shower Ima give his ass a bubble bath
Yoppas and choppas lil bitch I got a whole lotta of that
With the steal imma kill yeh I got em falling back
Got me feeling like a baby just feening so where my bottle at?
I'm just rhyming words I don't even know how to rap
Every time they see me best believe I be flossed up
Got crossed up dick in the dirt then I bossed up
I be catching these plays, fuck around and get mossed up
I be eating the booty like salad get it tossed up
Pop trunk on a hater while we waving goodbye
I'm from Lonestar sipping lean with pecan pie
I don't play by respect for that we gon die
Time Is money so best believe Ima be on time

Louis Vuitton umbrella when I walk through the rain
In the kitchen whipping chicken counting bread like Canes
Good dope got a Mexican looking like Johnny dang
Knee deep in muddy water still carrying my K
Right pocket got money left pocket cocaine
Bullet proof white Cadillac riding in a tank
Ima dirty bay baby from dirty bay with a dirty k
Slide down ya block light it up in flames

In the lac smoked out
Long 4s poked out
Keep Ps in the drought
Getting money down south
Feeling like Johnny Dang
Got diamonds in my chain
Hit ya bitch in the guts with this big ol thang
I got ice on my neck like it's swollen
They cold than a bitch ya these diamonds look frozen
Real players get chose so you know that I be chosen
Got exotic in my pocket grab a slapwood and I roll it
I stay out the way don't be all in the mix
Call me for 7s don't call me for 6
I ain't selling no grams bitch come buy a zip
See the streets getting dry finna go and take a trip let's dip

Ay
Hold up wait a minute
If I get it then I spend it
When im in it can't pretend it
Keep it tinted with my business
Im relentless
Leave no witness
I got two rent houses and them bitches get rented
Bitch I been a boss for a minute

Louis Vuitton umbrella when I walk through the rain
In the kitchen whipping chicken counting bread like Canes
Good dope got a Mexican looking like Johnny dang
Knee deep in muddy water still carrying my K
Right pocket got money left pocket cocaine
Bullet proof white Cadillac riding in a tank
Ima dirty bay baby from dirty bay with a dirty k
Slide down ya block light it up in flames

I got ice all over my body looking like a snow man
Big rocks in the grill dancing like a slow jam
My chain so heavy I'm walking like an old man
Try me and you gone get tagged like a spray paint can
Smoking something from slow can I'm getting throwed
It's getting cold put on a coat my ice froze
Riding 4s I'm poking out on nice toes
Drive slow my trunk up and the lights glow
And I'm sitting so low to the ground I might scrape it
Nothing fake candy the paint I might flake it
Riding down 288 my top vacant
Thinking you gone run up on me then you mistaken
Getting baked braking em off leaving em stained
I came thru dripping a puddle you thought it rained
Everything flawless from the grills to the chain
I done spent lot of change now I'm looking like Johnny Dang

Louis Vuitton umbrella when I walk through the rain
In the kitchen whipping chicken counting bread like Canes
Good dope got a Mexican looking like Johnny dang
Knee deep in muddy water still carrying my K
Right pocket got money left pocket cocaine
Bullet proof white Cadillac riding in a tank
Ima dirty bay baby from dirty bay with a dirty k
Slide down ya block light it up in flames

Vampire Empire

Big Thief

Liner Notes:

Had the opportunity to see Big Thief again this summer. This was a new track at the time.

Again, there seems to be a small, but memorable, "vampire" theme this year.

(shrug emoji)

FAVORITE LYRIC:

You turn me inside out, and then you want me outside in
You spin me all around, and then you ask me not to spin
You say you wanna be alone and you want children
You wanna be with me and you wanna be with him

All lyrics:

Watching TV tired, bleeding on the bed
The milk has just expired, all the leaves are dead
I'm not quiet, you've been quiet, just receiving what you said
Reeling, feeding, feeling, filled by everything you fed
I see you as you see yourself through all the books you read
Overwhelmed with guilt and realizing the disease

You give me chills, I've had it with the drills
I'm nothing, you are nothing, we are nothing with the pills
I am empty 'til she fills, alive until she kills
In her vampire empire, I am
Falling, yeah
Falling, yeah

I see you there, rejecting all your earthly power
Protecting and dissecting 'til you've emptied every hour
We jumped into the pond and then come under the shower
You lay upon my pillow and you open like a flower

I wanted to see you naked, I wanted to hear you scream
Wanted to kiss your skin and your everything
I wanted to be your woman, I wanted to be your man
I wanted to be the one that you could understand

You give me chills, I've had it with the drills
I'm nothing, you are nothing, we are nothing with the pills
I'm empty 'til she fills, alive until she kills
In her vampire empire, I am
Falling, yeah
Falling, yeah

Well, I walked into your dagger for the last time
It's like trying to start a fire with matches in the snow
Where you can't seem to hold me, can't seem to let me go
So I can't find surrender and I can't keep control

You turn me inside out, and then you want me outside in
You spin me all around, and then you ask me not to spin
You say you wanna be alone and you want children
You wanna be with me and you wanna be with him

You give me chills, I've had it with the drills
I'm nothing, you are nothing, we are nothing with the pills
I am empty 'til she fills, alive until she kills
In her vampire empire, I am
Falling, yeah
Falling, yeah

Falling, yeah
Falling, yeah
Falling, yeah
Falling, yeah

C'mon - Single Version

Panic! At The Disco

Liner Notes:

Sure! *C'mon* (Single Version) by Panic! At The Disco is a fascinating collaboration with indie rock darlings *fun.*, blending Brendon Urie’s theatrical vocals with Nate Ruess’s anthemic style. Released in 2011 as a one-off single, the song feels like a sonic tug-of-war between Panic!’s baroque pop dramatics and *fun.*’s grandiose indie energy—yet somehow, it works beautifully. Lyrically, it seems to grapple with frustration and longing, evoking that bittersweet push-and-pull of chasing something just out of reach (fitting for two ambitious bands at the time). While it's not a cover or sample, it’s a hidden gem that showcases what could've been if these two acts had teamed up more often—a tantalizing "what if" scenario in the alt-pop universe.

Paradise

Norah Jones

Liner Notes:

“Visions” by Norah Jones strikes a beautiful balance between dreamy introspection and a sense of longing. The song reflects her poetic exploration of love and connection, drawing inspiration from her feelings of vulnerability and hope. Notably, “Visions” features a lush arrangement that combines elements of jazz and folk, showcasing Jones’ hallmark smokiness in her voice. As for trivia, it encapsulates Jones’s creative growth, being one of the standout tracks from her 2016 album, **“Day Breaks.”** Interestingly, it doesn’t sample or cover another song directly but is rooted in jazz traditions—an homage to that rich vein of music history she often draws from. So, in many ways, it's a reflection of her artistic evolvement while still staying true to her roots.

Look At Miss Ohio

Valerie June

Liner Notes:

This isn't the first time this song has appeared on the favorites. Back in 2009, I did a "Best of the Last Decade" and featured the original recording by the great Gillian Welch. While the OG is hard to compare against, Valerie June does revive the song with a fresh look at Miss Ohio some 20 years later with her crisp and mesmerizing vocals.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

I know all about it, so you don't have to shout it
I'm gonna straighten it out somehow
Yeah I want to do right but not right now

All lyrics:

Oh me oh my oh, look at Miss Ohio
She's a-running around with her rag-top down
She says I want to do right but not right now

Gonna drive to Atlanta and live out this fantasy
Running around with the rag-top down
Yeah I want to do right but not right now

Had your arm around her shoulder, a regimental soldier
An' mamma starts pushing that wedding gown
Yeah you want to do right but not right now

Oh me oh my oh, would ya look at Miss Ohio
She's a-runnin' around with the rag-top down
She says I want to do right but not right now

I know all about it, so you don't have to shout it
I'm gonna straighten it out somehow
Yeah I want to do right but not right now

Oh me oh my oh, look at Miss Ohio
She a-runnin' around with her rag-top down
She says I want to do right , but not right now
Oh I want to do right but not right now

Just One Sec - Edit

The Antlers

Liner Notes:

For a second, I thought that I could free myself.

But... from what? From who?

Instead... I free you from me.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

Do you think you could free me from the man I've been?
Do you see me now, do you see me then?
Could you clear my cache momentarily?
For just one sec, free me from me

Free me from your limiting ideas of me
Free me from the version you prefer I’d be
When you grew tall and I fell short
Drop injunctions and clear the court
Forgive the debt that I've accrued
For just one sec, free me from you

I free you from the person I was sure I knew
I free you from a reputation you outgrew
I free you from behavior I еxpect to see
And my interpretation of history

'Causе I boxed you in unconsciously
And I saw you as I thought you ought to be
But by loving you imperfectly
For just one sec, I free you from me

Don't underestimate the power of a simple song.

Oh the things we (now) know, and yet didn't want to know.

Moth To A Flame

ARY

Liner Notes:

For whatever reason, this song was first on my "LISTEN 2021" playlist... and so I heard it... a lot!

Whether it's repetition or the lyrics or composition or that ARY is Norwegian, I'm drawn in.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

If your heart is a doorway
But there's nobody home
Should I say you'll be ok
Though I know you won't
Like the heat of the moment
Wouldn't burn anymore
And I could be lying and you wouldn't mind it at all
Love will grow deeper than pain ever could
Feel the roots interlace round your heart
Lay down your guard, open your scars
Now that I feel it I want you to know
That I'm no longer scared of the dark
If that is where you are
After all, the further away
I only ever think about you more
Like a moth to a flame
There are nights when you wake me
In forever ago
It was all just a bad dream
I don't even have to let you go
And the way you embrace me
It's inevitable
That the moment I wake every part of me breaks
And I'm left in a pile on the floor
Love will grow deeper than pain ever could
Feel the roots interlace round your heart
Lay down your guard, open your scars
Now that I feel it I want you to know
That I'm no longer scared of the dark
If that is where you are
After all, the further away
I only ever think about you more
Like a moth to a flame
That's all we are
A moth to a flame
I won't be far
You'll find me again
That is all we are ever gonna be
So are you ever gonna talk to me
Oh talk to me and be with me
Baby tell me you will, hey
After all, the further away
I only ever think about you more
Like a moth to a flame

Glorious Game

El Michels Affair

Liner Notes:

A little shoutout to the "glory days" of playing games.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Too abstract for y'all to retrace
You all would be safe but y'all are deep fake

Too fake for me to waste time
Too two-faced for me to say "Fine"

All lyrics:

Okay, I'm too Black for y'all to erase

Shoot too straight for y'all to replace

Too abstract for y'all to retrace

You all would be safe but y'all are deep fake

Too fake for me to waste time
Too two-faced for me to say "Fine"
I'm the one-man army, Ason

The baseline is we just ain't the same kind

Gloves and mask off, time to blast off

Baton I'll pass off, rhyme your ass off

If we clash, I'll haul the trash off

Then haul the cash off and ball in Nassau

That's all, it ain't too much talk

All y'all chumps, it ain't enough chalk

Y'all thought the name was just Thought?

C'mon, I'm too strong for y'all to cut short

You see light like mine once a lifetime

When some young gun becomes an icon

But somehow they'll cut down the flight time

Unless they send that heat down the pipeline

My mind is hard to explain

Call y'all all aboard for this train

I float like a nautilus, mane

Damn, I love this glorious game

Ahh, pimpin' ain't dead, baby
Mackin' ain't dead, baby, ooh, these are the glory days
Pimpin' ain't dead, baby
Mackin' ain't dead, baby, I swear, these are the glory days

I might put my fur on and talk my shit
I might put my game on and take your bitch
I might put my fur on and talk my shit (My shit)
I might put my game on and take your bitch

Okay, I'm proof that we all should get free

Direct from the streets of S.P.

Who alone tryna be the next thing

For real, I'm just tryna be the best me, so

No gas, I'm high in octane

Which icon am I if not flames?

Goddammit, guess who not lame

And locked the block down before the blockchain

Stop playin', the stakes is too high

Some say life's a trip, then you die

Patience brings all things in due time

If you's a real one, well, that's a true sign

My time the valuable kind

Take these words to rendezvous by

Y'all style on the comical side

I drive psychological vibes

Seekers, keep this close to your chest

Weakness killed this culture, more or less

Your projects is such a snorefest

No paycheck, just exit stage left

My grind is hard to explain

I contain one marvelous brain

I float like a nautilus, mane

Damn, I love this glorious game

Ahh, pimpin' ain't dead, baby
Mackin' ain't dead, baby, ooh, these are the glory days
Pimpin' ain't dead, baby
Mackin' ain't dead, baby, I swear, these are the glory days

I might put my fur on and talk my shit
I might put my game on and take your bitch
I might put my fur on and talk my shit (My shit)
I might put my game on and take your bitch

These are the glory days
These are the glory days

I might put my fur on and talk my shit
I might put my game on and take your bitch
I might put my fur on and talk my shit (I might put my fur on and talk my shit)
I might put my game on and take your bitch (I might put my game on and take your bitch)

Space Invader

The National

Liner Notes:

I would normally not even mention the context of "Space Invader" — presuming everyone is aware of the reference. But sometimes I forget that once owning an Atari 2600 with the Space Invader cartridge in the early 80s dates me quite a bit.

This song has all the traditional hallmarks of a great National song — nostalgic lyrics, a swelling ballad, meta-esque-reflections.

In particular, this one is asking the question we can't seem to escape... "What if?"

FAVORITE LYRIC:

What if I'd never written the letter
I slipped in the sleeve of the record I gave you?
What if I'd stayed on the C train to Lafayette
What if we'd never met?
What if I'd only just done what you told me
And never looked back?
What if I'd only ducked away down the hallway
And faded to black?

All lyrics:

It's a calculation I made a mistake on
I never should have said it like I said it
It'll come to me later like a space invader
And I won't be able to get it out of my head

What if I'd never written the letter
I slipped in the sleeve of the record I gave you?
What if I'd stayed on the C train to Lafayette?
What if we'd never met?
What if I'd only just done what you told me
And never looked back?
What if I'd only ducked away down the hallway
And faded to black?

It was too romantic
It was sad and frantic
A paperback book in a storm drain
It could go number one if I copied anyone
From a melody that I wish I had

What if I'd never written the letter
I slipped in the sleeve of the record I gave you?
What if I'd stayed on the C train to Lafayette?
What if we'd never met?
What if I'd only just done what you told me
And never looked back?
What if I'd only ducked away down the hallway
And faded to black?

What if I'd never written the letter
I slipped in the sleeve of the record I gave you?
What if I'd stayed on the C train to Lafayette
What if we'd never met?
What if I'd only just done what you told me
And never looked back?
What if I'd only ducked away down the hallway
And faded to black?

It'll come to me later like a space invader
I won't be able to get it out of my head

Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore

Why'd I leave it like that?
Why'd I leave it like that?

Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore

Why'd I leave it like that?

Why'd I leave it like that?

Why'd I leave it like that?

Why'd I leave it like that?

Why'd I leave it like that?

Why'd I leave it like that?

Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Quarter after four in the morning
My heart's software gore
Why'd I leave it like that?

Good Luck, Babe!

Chappell Roan

Liner Notes:

"Good Luck, Babe!" by Chappell Roan is a shimmering, theatrical breakup anthem that drips with both heartache and a knowing smirk. The song explores the lingering grip of a past relationship, with Roan seemingly addressing an ex who insists they’ve moved on—though she’s not buying it. With its soaring, emotionally raw delivery, the track has drawn comparisons to Lana Del Rey’s melancholic storytelling, though Roan injects it with her signature campy drama. Fun fact: She’s often referred to as “the future pop princess of drag,” a title well-earned given her over-the-top aesthetics and infectious showmanship. “Good Luck, Babe!” feels like the indie-pop lovechild of Fleetwood Mac’s “Silver Springs” and a neon-lit fever dream, proving that Roan isn’t just here to play—she’s here to rule.

High Note [Feat. Stax Music Academy]

Valerie June

Liner Notes:

“High Note [Feat. Stax Music Academy]” by Valerie June is a radiant expression of positivity and resilience, grappling with the complexities of facing societal struggles through the lens of upliftment. The inspiration behind the song highlights June’s deep-rooted appreciation for community and collaboration, prominent in the involvement of the Stax Music Academy, which further captures the essence of soul music’s past and Numative optimistic spirit. Notably, the track is interwoven with elements that echo Valerie June's distinctive blend of folk, blues, and soul, illuminating the song's resonating message about staying aligned with one’s voice amidst chaos. Also, the Denver production essentially engulfs the powerful heritage linked with the legendary Stax Records, inspiring a reverence for musical story-telling. As she quips with grace, "weight matched delight," lifted center-stage—and who doesn't love a bit of lyrical play?

Flirted With You All My Life

Bright Eyes

Liner Notes:

A Vic Chestnut cover.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

I am a man
I am self aware
Everywhere I go, you're always right there with me

I flirted with you all my life
Even kissed you once or twice
To this day I swear it was nice
But clearly, I was not ready

When you touched a friend of mine
I thought that I would lose my mind
But I found out with time
That really, I was not ready
No, no

Oh death, oh death, oh death
Really, I'm not ready

Oh death you hector me
And decimate those dear to me
You tease me with your sweet relief
You are cruel, and you are constant

When my mom was cancer sick
She fought but then succumbed to it
But you made her beg for it
Lord Jesus, please, I'm ready

Oh death, oh death, oh death
Really, I'm not ready
No, no, no
Oh death, oh death, oh death
Clearly I'm not ready, no

Oh death, oh death, oh death
Clearly I'm not ready

Someone New

Helena Deland

Liner Notes:

Relationships are complicated.

Hell, humans are complicated.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

If I could have every thought
As though for the first time
I'd never get sick of
The patterns of my mind
But I am stuck
I am stuck

If things go my way
I'll stay in this room
Where tonight I want to lay
Kissing someone new
With a familiar face
I can't replace

Because remembering, no
It hasn't been enough
It's like the partial glow
A bright flower gives off
At night
Color imprecise

What if I told you
It'll all just end the same?
And then turned to you
Showed you my game
You'd believe I'm stuck
'Til I get ahold of

A stranger to remind me
I don't contain the world
It is outside, can't I see?
And in it, I'm this lucky girl
And how to play my role
'Til I get too old

By then remembering, oh
It better be enough
I'll be covered head to toe
In the faded flower patterns of memories
Of nights like these
Of good times passed
I'll be home at last

And I will give
Myself a fucking break

If things go my way
I'll stay in this room
Where again I want to lay
Kissing someone new
Who tells me
Something pretty
So that I too
Can feel like someone new

Big Time

Angel Olsen

Liner Notes:

Angel Olsen started her singing career as a backup vocalists to Bonnie "Prince" Billy. You'll hear the influence in this album.

The "Lady in Red" reference is for you girls... you know who you are! ;)

A love song.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Take to the lake, playing "Lady In Red"
Hanging onto every word that you said
Staying up all night, out by the fire
Singing your song now, you know I'm a crier

And I'm losing, I'm losing, I've left it behind
Guess I had to be losing to get here on time
And I'm living, I'm loving, I've loved long before
And I'm loving you big time, I'm loving you more

All lyrics:

Good morning kisses, giving you all mine
Pull back the curtains, show me the sunshine
Needing this coffee, needing some nature
Need it right now, it can't wait until later

We're always busy, baby, not this time
Lay in the tall grass, talking with your eyes
Talking with your eyes before we knew we were
Thinking the same things, I'm a believer

And I'm losing, I'm losing, I've left it behind
Guess I had to be losing to get here on time
And I'm living, I'm loving, I've loved long before
I'm loving you big time, I'm loving you more

Take to the lake, playing "Lady In Red"
Hanging onto every word that you said
Staying up all night, out by the fire
Singing your song now, you know I'm a crier

And I'm losing, I'm losing, I've left it behind
Guess I had to be losing to get here on time
And I'm living, I'm loving, I've loved long before
And I'm loving you big time, I'm loving you more

And I'm losing, I'm losing, I've left it behind
Guess I had to be losing to get here on time
And I'm living, I'm loving, I've loved long before
And I'm loving you big time, I'm loving you more

And I'm loving you big time
And I'm loving you big time

And I'm loving you big time
I'm loving you big time

Worried Shoes

Danielson, Sufjan Stevens

Liner Notes:

If I can help it, I'm going to find a way to feature Sufjan on every "favorites" that I can. Here he collabs with Danielson, who also emerged out of a Christian tradition (i.e. Tooth & Nail Records).

But the funny thing about this track is that it's not only a cover (of Daniel Johnston), it's not new at all.... Well, it was "released" for the modern streaming world this year, but it was first released in 2006 and is rumored to have only appeared on Danielson's MySpace page (and yes, this was one of the ways I found new music in 2006).

FAVORITE LYRIC:

And my shoes took me down a crooked path
Away from all welcome mats
My ah ah worried shoes
And then one day I looked around and I found the sun shining down
And I took off my worried shoes

All lyrics:

I took my lucky break and I broke it in two
Put on my worried shoes
My ah ah worried shoes
And my shoes took me so many miles and they never wore out
My worried shoes

My ah ah worried shoes
My ah ah worried shoes

I made a mistake and I never forgot
I tied knots in the laces of
My ah ah worried shoes
And with every step that I'd take I'd remember my mistake
As I marched further and further away

In my ah ah worried shoes
My ah ah worried shoes

And my shoes took me down a crooked path
Away from all welcome mats
My ah ah worried shoes
And then one day I looked around and I found the sun shining down
And I took off my worried shoes

And the feet broke free
I didn't need to wear
Then I knew the difference between worrying and caring
Cause I've got a lot of walking to do
And I don't want to wear
My ah ah worried shoes

Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?

McKinley Dixon

Liner Notes:

While this isn't pure jazz per say, it's close.

And I've decided I need more jazz in my life.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

'Cause if the heart pulls the rest up at the seams
Then that fist gon' grip something that could tip the balance beam for his

Beloved, paradise, jazz

All lyrics:

Beloved, paradise, jazz
Beloved, paradise, jazz
Beloved, paradise, jazz (Keep my braids)
Beloved, paradise, jazz

Braids for the summer, I'm less likely to falter
Gold fingertips rusted, now the color has altered
Deny food from the hand, matriarch is insulted
The house is crumbling, hurry out the backdoor bolting
The rubble recently reset my bones
Black skin to concrete, within it I feel at home
Surrounded by all my niggas, it's a feeling I missed
I was once nothing and then suddenly I was fixed
One filled with so much heat, praise sun 'fore I hit the street
'Cause if I loosen grip a little, results finna be bleak, oh well
Light escaping, tryna grab it at the wrist
I was once nothing, then a heart sprang out from the fist
Hellish and unkempt, lungs filled with ragged breath
Open mouth to speak, pop that boy 'fore he can step
'Cause if the heart pulls the rest up at the seams
Then that fist gon' grip something that could tip the balance beam for his

Beloved, paradise, jazz (Yeah)
Beloved, paradise, jazz
Beloved, paradise, jazz
Beloved, paradise, jazz, jazz, jazz

The sun lends cracks to both sides of my eyes
My gums still black, how else you tell that I lie?
Showing off my canines, glow too bright for the reverend
And though they all go, me and dawg might see different heavens
Time alone has never once been a crutch
The worst thing for a god is you realizing they can be touched
Saw me aiming at the heavens, sun can't give me a kiss
'Cause blacker-the-berry less likely, when he shoot he gon' miss
Wake up

Held you with my arms, I barely felt the beating
This a side of my heart I ain't really shown too many seasons
Running up those stairs, tryna catch you right before you leavin'
I ain't make it, I guess it all gon' happen for a reason
As I stand up on the balcony and look to the ground
Money kept me moving but the heart wasn't found
When I was standing on the edge about to fall off that cliff
What kept me on was looking up and seeing my hand in your grip, my

Beloved, paradise, jazz, jazz
Beloved, paradise, jazz
Beloved, paradise, jazz, jazz
Beloved, paradise, jazz
Beloved, paradise, jazz (Jazz, jazz, jazz)
Beloved, paradise, jazz (Paradise, jazz, jazz)
Beloved, paradise, jazz (Jazz, paradise, paradise)
Beloved, paradise, jazz (Paradise, jazz)
Beloved, paradise, jazz (Jazz, Jazz)

Bending Hectic

The Smile

Liner Notes:

There are singer-songwriters in abundance these days (and on these favorites). But there are very few experimental/progressive rock bands that actually "rock" (as cliché as that may sound).

The Smile, which is Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead + Tom Skinner (drums), is undoubtedly one of these bands. And this song, is undoubtedly one of these songs.

Don't be scared by the song's length. Every second is worth it.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

The ground is coming for me now
We've gone over the edge
If you've got something to say
Say it now

All lyrics:

I'm changing down the gears
I'm slamming on the brakes
A vintage soft top
From the sixties

We're coming to a bend now
Skidding 'round the hairpin
A sheer drop down
The Italian mountainside

Time is kind of frozen
As you're gazing at the view
And I swear I'm seeing double

No one's gonna bring me down, no
No way and no how
I'm letting go of the wheel

'Cause it might be as well
It might be as well

I've got these slings
I've got these arrows
I'll force myself to
I've got these slings
I've got these arrows
I'll force myself to turn, turn

The ground is coming for me now
We've gone over the edge
If you've got something to say
Say it now

No one's gonna bring me down, no
No way and no how
I'm letting go
Of the wheel

Despite these slings
Despite these arrows
I'll force myself to
Despite these slings
Despite these arrows
I'll force myself to turn
Turn

Turn
Turn
Turn
Turn

Fuck

Lola Young

Liner Notes:

Lola Young’s song *Fuck* is a raw, soul-baring lament about the emotional chaos of a deteriorating relationship, where love and frustration tangle into one messy, expletive-laden confession. Released in 2021, the track showcases Young’s signature blend of neo-soul and singer-songwriter vulnerability, dripping with the kind of unfiltered honesty that makes you feel like you’ve just read a private diary entry. Her raspy vocals and stripped-down production amplify the song’s intimacy, making every lyric hit a little harder. While *Fuck* isn’t built on any major samples or covers, it does carry shades of classic confessional songwriting, reminiscent of artists like Amy Winehouse or even Jorja Smith. Fun fact: despite its NSFW title, the song found a wide audience, proving once again that raw emotion (and a well-placed expletive) resonates beyond radio-friendliness.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

All lyrics:

There is no insanity, rather a super sanity More suited for life at the end of the 20th century Where everything is art And everything is trying to express it Where everything is art And everything is trying to communicate it... All intelligent beings sleep the dreaming of dreams And they've all come up to meet met tonight Although while in the morning, all their wonder and their Glory was turned ugly and quite simple Like a venue when you're loading in gear Sexuality, eroticism in asexual persuasions Man or woman, makes no difference in the outcome No fashion, no tolerance for stupidity or ignorance ..."adidas" or "the arch deluxe"... And time is now an object Oh my fucking god... Oh I'm fucking god... And I'll dream this into becoming real And until such time that you can prove me otherwise I will continue with my agnostic travels Until I've found a place that dreams with me... ...a place that feeds on my routine All I want is my mommy... All I want is my mommy... All I want is my mommy... All I want is my mommy... This is the night that it all changes

Life Is

Jessica Pratt

Liner Notes:

"Here in the Pitch" by Jessica Pratt showcases her distinctive lofi folk style, with deeply haunting vocals that filter through dreamy, ethereal soundscapes. Lyrically, the song explores themes of introspection and the passage of time, often leaving listeners to ponder their own experiences and connections. This track embodies Pratt's personal journey in the music scene, arising from a pair of collaborators and moments that resonate with anyone who's ever grappled with their identity in turbulent times. Notable trivia includes her use of unique recording techniques that evoke an organic, speaker-infused ambiance—the essence of DIY artistry. Although "Here in the Pitch" comprehensively presents her singular voice, so far as I'm aware, it does not sample or cover any other song directly—capturing instead the vast range within her original thought.

Certainty

Big Thief

Liner Notes:

Over the last few years, Adrianne Lenker is likely to show up on the favorites via Big Thief and/or her solo work. While this album came out in 2022, the single "Change" came out in 2021 and made last year's favorites. "Certainty" is my second favorite on the album and one of rich lyrics and Lenker's trademark campfire vocals.

At the age of 31, Lenker is just waiting to have a movie made about her... born and raised in a Christian cult, wrote her first song at 8, first album at 13, 3x state champion in martial arts, married Big Thief co-founder Buck Meek, then divorced, then dated Indigo Sparks ("Pressure in My Chest") briefly, and yet kept "Big Thief" together throughout, remaining "deep friends" with Meek. It's no wonder she has the ability to write with such tension and certainty...

Maybe.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Maybe I love you
Maybe I love you is a river so high
Maybe I love you is a river so low
I love you, still don't know

My certainty is wild, weaving
For you, I am a child, believing

All lyrics:

Name on the line, last request
Pull the car over to find some rest
Saying "I love you"
Need to lie here, need to leave
Living in the debt of make-believe
Saying I owe you
Crooked as a crow gnawing on dawn
Shadow from the grass in the dirt on the lawn
Why do I string you along?

My certainty is wild, weaving
For you, I am a child, believing
You lay beside me sleeping on a plane
In the future

Sit on the phone, watch TV
Romance, action, mystery
Wanted to show you
Sine wave is a particle ride
Bring your light out, then in on the tide
Maybe I love you
Maybe I love you is a river so high
Maybe I love you is a river so low
I love you, still don't know

My certainty is wild, weaving
For you, I am a child, believing
You lay beside me sleeping on a plane
In the future

My certainty is wild, weaving
For you, I am a child, believing
You lay beside me sleeping on a plane
In the future

happy accident

Tomberlin

Liner Notes:

Good question Sarah Beth... good question.

FAVORITE LYRIC:

Walk five miles from my door
Just to give you some more
Do you just talk to me
When you're lonely and bored?
And don't you act like that
When you know what I feel
And don't you tell me to stay
'Cause you know that I will

All lyrics:

What's the point of this
If I know how it ends?
You said I got the spark
Well baby, are you the flint?
And don't you dare me to
'Cause you know that I will
And don't you say those words
That ain't part of our deal

Walk five miles from my door
Just to give you some more
Do you just talk to me
When you're lonely and bored?
And don't you act like that
When you know what I feel
And don't you tell me to stay
'Cause you know that I will

But you get so close
I almost don't bite my lip
Happy accident
And I wanna die
When you say don't cry
I won't quit
Happy accident

Always measure my time
By the way you spend mine
I wanna burn it all down
Could I borrow a light?
And don't you dare me to
I could leave in the night
And don't you dare me to
'Cause you know I could fly

But you get so close
I almost don't bite your lip
Happy accident
And I wanna die
When you say don't cry
I won't quit
I'm no accident

What's the point of this?
I don't know how it ends
